We're seeking a dependable and experienced Concrete Roller Equipment Operator to join our paving crew. If you take pride in creating smooth, durable surfaces and understand the art and science behind compaction, we want you on our team.
Pay Rate: $25–$30 per hour (based on experience)
Per Diem: Provided when traveling
Location: Based in Irondale, AL
Schedule: Full-time
Position Overview
As a Concrete Roller Equipment Operator, you’ll be responsible for operating rollers to compact earth, subgrade, and asphalt surfaces to achieve proper compaction and smoothness on highways, streets, and construction projects. You’ll work closely with paving crews and foremen to ensure quality and safety standards are met on every job.
Responsibilities Include:
- Operate roller in successive, overlapping passes to compact and finish asphalt surfaces
- Distribute, compress, and finish cooling asphalt using proper roller techniques
- Determine machine speed and direction based on material compressibility and temperature
- Monitor rolling temperatures and operate within optimal compaction windows
- Adjust frequency, amplitude, and drum mode based on mix design, thickness, and temperature
- Coordinate movements using hand/audio signals from crew members
- Establish efficient rolling patterns based on paving width, roller width, drum overlap, and paver speed
- Work with density technicians to meet or exceed compaction standards
- Assist with setup and takedown of job site signs and safety measures
- Perform daily maintenance and inspections of water and fluid systems
- Report and troubleshoot any equipment or material issues
- Help with trimming edge lines, hand rolling, manholes, catch basins, and cleanup
- Ensure safety procedures and protocols are followed at all times
- Maintain logs of equipment usage and issues encountered
Required Knowledge & Skills:
- Understanding of material temperature ranges and compaction strategies
- Ability to recognize flaws in material or finished mat and respond appropriately
- Familiarity with transverse joint rolling and avoidance of roller marks
- Knowledge of flow lines, inverts, and proper edge finishes
- Strong communication with paving crew, foreman, and density technicians
- Ability to identify and avoid potential hazards (utilities, obstacles, workers)
- Initiative and willingness to assist with other tasks as needed
