About The Role
The Substation Civil Engineer is responsible for planning, design, and analysis of substation infrastructure, including foundations, site grading, drainage, and structural components. This position requires strong technical skills in civil and structural engineering, along with the ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality design solutions. The engineer will collaborate with project teams, clients, and regulatory bodies to deliver high-quality engineering solutions. Areas of focus include substations/switchyards for Wind, Solar, Battery Energy Storage, and stand-alone electrical projects from conception through construction and commissioning.

About The Role
The Substation Civil Engineer is responsible for planning, design, and analysis of substation infrastructure, including foundations, site grading, drainage, and structural components. This position requires strong technical skills in civil and structural engineering, along with the ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality design solutions. The engineer will collaborate with project teams, clients, and regulatory bodies to deliver high-quality engineering solutions. Areas of focus include substations/switchyards for Wind, Solar, Battery Energy Storage, and stand-alone electrical projects from conception through construction and commissioning.
Key Responsibilities
- The position requires the candidate to work within a multi-disciplinary team for the conducting of site layouts, grading design, drainage design, drainage reports, foundation design, structure design, and support design of Substation projects.
- Coordinate design activities to maintain project schedules, budget, quality requirements to ensure successful project completion.
- Accountable to provide design activities in accordance with applicable codes and standards (ACI, ASCE, AISC, IEEE, NEC, NESC, etc.), including UUE’s policies and procedures, such as Safety, Environmental, Quality Assurance and Quality Control.
- Prepares and produces drawings, sketches and details for use by technical staff, drafting personnel, clients and contractors.
- Prepares input data for computerized solutions to engineering problems. Utilizes computers for input and output of data and execution of stored programs.
- Write technical reports summarizing site design, drainage designs, and foundation designs.
- Review of topographic surveys, geotechnical reports and vendor drawings for acceptability and making calculations as required.
- Delivery of accurate and thorough designs that will meet industry standards and client specifications and meet good engineering practice with excellent constructability.
- Assists in the preparation of progress reports, compliance documentation and record-keeping of substation technical documents and drawings.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Key Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree in civil engineering plus five (5) years of field training is required. Registration as an Engineer-in-training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) is preferred.
- A minimum of two (2) years of engineering experience in the electric utility industry or related practice is preferred. Working knowledge of basic substation electrical engineering principles, methods and applications is beneficial.
- Requires coordination with other groups to ensure the projects are successful.
- Collaborate with a team of engineering professionals.
- Results driven with strong planning, organizational skills, and a drive to learn.
- Must be capable of reading and interpreting technical documents, drawings, and prints.
- Must be able to follow technical directions from senior staff and technical personnel, as may be required.
- Prepare input data for computerized solutions to engineering problems.
- Must be competent with the following Software: o Microsoft Office Suite o Bluebeam (preferred) o AutoCAD o Hydraflow Hydrographs (preferred) o Civil3D (preferred) o Inventor (preferred) o RISA (preferred) o LPILE (preferred)
- General office or hybrid working conditions. Work outside the regular schedule may be required. Must possess a valid driver's license and an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report. Travel for work may also be required for relevant site visits (up to 10%).
