What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medical Assistant position at UNITED VETERANS BEACON HOUSE, INC.?
PURPOSE
The Meical Assistant will work directly with each veteran to educate and assist them in medication management. They will aid veterans in taking medications, pill counts, dosage schedules, refills and renewals, and completing all documentation needed by the VA. The Medical Assistant will provide basic care, assisting with personal hygiene and wound care. They will also facilitate weekly focus groups on personal hygiene, education on medication management, healthy lifestyles, and other groups that are identified as potentially beneficial for the target population.
REQUIREMENTS
- Certified Medical Assistant.
- Compassionate towards patients.
- Strong communication skills.
- Must be patient and capable of dealing with the stress of caring for mentally ill, physically sick and injured people.
- Must have a valid NYS Driver’s License.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Monitor each veteran and report adverse reactions to medications and/or treatment to the veteran’s primary care physician.
- Reviewing medications upon client intake to determine if any are classified as controlled substances. Medical Assistant will maintain accountability of any controlled substances.
- Provide training to each veteran participating in the Telehealth Program in properly using the machine, including what each question means, monitoring the outcome, and providing support to each veteran throughout the process.
- Changing bandages and wound dressings.
- Ensuring basic needs, such as proper diet, food and fluid intake, are in order.
- Keep track of multiple patients’ medications, vital signs, and general wellbeing.
- Record each resident’s medical history diligently and accurately.
- Observe patients under treatment to identify progress, side-effects of medications, and any other changes or issues.
- Follow medication storage and handling procedures.
- Prepare and distribute medications.
- Schedule and confirm appointments.
- Explain medical procedures.
- Maintain medical inventory.
