What does a Controller do?
As the Controller at United Way for Southeastern Michigan, you will play a critical role in ensuring financial accuracy and effectiveness within our organization. You will be responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining robust financial controls and guidelines that adhere to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and compliance requirements, including 2 CFR 200 and funder-specific standards. This position encompasses the oversight of day-to-day finance operations and the maintenance of meticulous financial records and systems. Collaborating closely with the CFO, Senior Accounting Manager, and Director of Budget Compliance, you will offer valuable thought partnership and drive the implementation of best practices that enhance financial controls across the organization.

To succeed as the Controller at United Way for Southeastern Michigan, candidates must possess a strong foundation in accounting and finance, reflected in a Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Business Administration. A Master's degree is preferred, along with a minimum of five years' experience in a senior-level accounting or finance management role. Experience in not-for-profit or governmental fund accounting is crucial, complemented by at least three years of relevant expertise. Excellent management and supervisory skills are essential to lead a high-performance team effectively. You should also have a solid working knowledge of financial management, budgeting, and audit processes.
Familiarity with state and federal grant regulations and experience in navigating compliance requirements is advantageous. Additionally, holding a professional certification such as CPA (Certified Public Accountant) will set you apart as a qualified candidate who can drive financial integrity and innovation within our organization.
Knowledge and skills required for the position are:
- Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Accounting or Business Administration; Master's degree preferred
- Five or more years of experience as a senior-level accounting or finance manager
- Three or more years of experience with not for profit or governmental fund accounting; must have excellent management & supervisory experience.
- Working knowledge of financial management and budgeting; experience with audits
- State and federal grant experience preferred
- Professional certification
