Position Summary
The Assistant Finance Manager supports the day-to-day financial operations of United Way of Merced County (UWMC) under the direction of the Chief Financial Officer (CFO). This role assists with financial reporting, reconciliations, budgeting, and accounts management, ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards. The Assistant Finance Manager also monitors and supports the work of part-time bookkeepers assigned to the RISE program, ensuring financial best practices are followed. This is an accountant-level role, responsible for maintaining financial accuracy and assisting in financial compliance and tracking for both UWMC and the RISE program.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Operations & Compliance
- Collaborate with the CFO to manage daily financial activities for both UWMC and RISE.
- Assist with accounts payable and receivable, general ledger entries, and month-end close processes.
- Assist in preparing and analyzing financial statements, budgets, and forecasts to guide fiscal decision-making.
- Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards (GAAP), including cash management and monthly reconciliation of accounts.
- Support with audits, grant and contract financial compliance.
RISE Program Financial Oversight
- Assist the CFO in monitoring and reviewing financial data handled by part-time bookkeepers, ensuring accuracy and compliance with RISE program financial requirements.
- Work with program leads and grant managers to ensure RISE financial activities align with approved budgets.
Budgeting & Reporting
- Assist the CFO in preparing financial reports, expense tracking, and fund monitoring for both UWMC operations and RISE program services.
- Support monthly financial reconciliations, reviewing and resolving discrepancies as needed.
- Help track and monitor program expenses and funding allocations to maintain financial transparency.
Internal Controls & Best Practices
- Maintain documentation of financial transactions and records, ensuring accuracy and adherence to policies.
- Assist in establishing and maintaining strong internal controls to safeguard financial integrity.
- Support the CFO in training finance staff and nonprofit partners on financial best practices.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or equal work experience.
- Two (2) years of professional accounting or financial management experience (preferably in a nonprofit, government, or grant-funded organization).
- Strong knowledge of accounts payable (AP), accounts receivable (AR), reconciliations, and financial reporting.
- Proficiency in financial data analysis, budgeting, and cash flow monitoring.
- Experience working with QuickBooks, fund accounting software, or similar financial systems.
- Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
- Ability to review and interpret financial statements, ensuring accuracy in transactions and reports.
