POSITION SUMMARY
United We Dream (UWD) is looking for passionate and self-motivated Federal Advocacy Interns to join our internship program. In collaboration with the Federal Advocacy Team, interns will research, develop, and support the implementation of advocacy campaigns that advance UWD’s immigration justice goals at the federal level. These campaigns will focus on combating disinformation, protecting immigrant communities from deportation and detention, and advancing pro-immigrant policies through legislative and administrative advocacy.
The ideal candidate will be deeply committed to UWD’s mission, interested in learning the mechanics of federal policymaking, and eager to contribute to advocacy campaigns that elevate the voices of immigrant youth. This is a remote, part-time position.
CURRICULUM & LEARNING OUTCOMES
The internship will provide both professional and educational opportunities. Interns will participate in interactive workshops and training led by UWD’s advocacy, communications, and political teams. Below are some of the key skills and concepts interns will develop and apply throughout the program:
Concepts:
- The role of advocacy in social movements
- Immigration policy and legislative process
- Narrative strategy and combating disinformation
- The intersection of people power, policy, and politics
- Inside-outside strategy and movement building
Critical Skills:
- Conducting legislative and administrative policy research
- Developing strategic relationships with policymakers and allies
- Writing advocacy materials, including fact sheets and policy memos
- Understanding digital advocacy and communications strategies
- Project management and organizing skills
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support the implementation of federal advocacy campaigns: Assist the Federal Advocacy Team in researching, planning, and executing advocacy and policy campaigns that advance immigrant justice at the federal level.
- Conduct research and create public education materials: Research key immigration policy issues, draft short policy briefs, and contribute to the creation of advocacy resources such as fact sheets, talking points, and public education materials.
- Assist with strategic engagement: Support the coordination of meetings with congressional offices, federal agencies, and coalition partners. Help prepare meeting materials and take notes to document key takeaways.
- Monitor and analyze policy developments: Track legislative and administrative changes that impact immigrant communities and provide updates to the UWD Advocacy Team.
- Participate in team meetings and organizational events: Attend advocacy team meetings, contribute to discussions, and represent the internship cohort in broader organizational meetings.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- Basic knowledge of and commitment to immigrant rights advocacy
- Strong research and writing skills, with attention to detail
- Passion for UWD’s mission and a desire to deepen knowledge of federal policy
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
- Familiarity with digital tools like Zoom, Slack, and Google Suite
- Although not required, a major plus if you are multilingual
CULTURAL COMPETENCY
- Strong understanding of the immigrant experience
- Understanding of race, gender, sexuality, and other aspects of identity, and how they intersect with immigration justice
- Self-awareness of personal identities and ability to adapt approaches as needed
- Ability to build strong relationships and trust across race, gender, class, and other identities, both internally and externally
COMPENSATION
Interns will receive a stipend of $20 per hour and will be expected to commit 15 hours per week for 12 weeks. A regular work schedule can be coordinated with the supervisor.
LOCATION
As UWD is a remote-first workplace, this is a fully remote position. We have a preference to hire in states where we already have employees working from home: AZ, DC, CT, CA, FL, IL, MO, NJ, NM, NY, OK, SC, and TX.
