Overview

Assumes the responsibility of coordinating the student radiographers’ clinical education by means of evaluation, instruction and counseling. This position receives instructional direction including didactic teaching responsibilities from the Program Manager of the School of Radiologic Technology (the School). Is an employee of St. Luke’s Hospital with functional responsibilities to the school. Is expected to understand and support the vision and mission of St. Luke’s Hospital and for carrying out the philosophy and objectives established by the Board of Directors and the Care Council. Foremost among those responsibilities are strictly adhering to detail in the performance of department procedures, solving practical problems, resolving conflict and implementing constructive change.

Responsibilities

Instruction

Provides classroom and clinical supervision for approximately twenty student radiographers assigned to St. Luke’s Hospital.


Provides clinical education for student radiographers assigned to St. Luke’s Hospital by:


Providing clinical instruction and supervision for student radiographers.
Facilitating clinical evaluations of student educational progress either directly or through other faculty members.
Coordinating and evaluating of the clinical competency program for each assigned student.
Maintaining clinical records.
Coordinating interactions and relationships between students, associates and the hospital.
Resolving conflict between students, associates and medical staff that may hamper the students educational progress.
Coordinates and evaluates the activities of the Clinical Instructors by:
Meeting with them on a regular basis.
Providing instruction and guidance on educational matters.
Participates in didactic instruction as assigned by the Program Manager.
Assists in the planning, implementation, presentation and evaluation of the approved curriculum.
Produces lesson plans and class schedules to ensure continuity of education.
Provides formal testing of students’ knowledge of subjects presented.
Facilitates the presentation of in-service education for the Imaging Services Department.

Leadership
Provides leadership to students by:


Counseling students on personal and academic matters.
Maintaining accurate records of student’s performance and progress in both academic and clinical components of the curriculum.
Providing input for establishing or changing school policies.

Providing input to the Program Manager in the preparation of the FTE, capital and operating budgets.
Participates in the recruitment, interviewing, admission and orientation of new students.
Serves on the Governing Committee in an advisory capacity.
Promotes radiologic technology and the school by participating in health career events in the hospital and community

Assumes responsibility for the School in the absence of the Program Manager in collaboration remaining school faculty.
Keeps current with new technologies in area(s) of specific responsibility; documents, prepares recommendations and implements decisions relating to capital equipment, procedures, clinical activities, and quality assurance to assure a competitive posture for the hospital and Unity Point Health.

Assists in preparing, reviewing, reporting, and adjusting practices within Imaging Services, and especially within assigned area(s), to meet necessary standards for Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospital Organizations, American College of Radiology, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and Iowa Department Public of Health. Assures compliance with all applicable state and federal law.

Uses AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, and Thank You) with every patient interaction to create patient and family experiences consistent with the mission of St. Luke’s Hospital.
Perform patient transfers with approved transfer mobility equipment when appropriate.

Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.


Qualifications

Education:

Must possess or be in pursuit of a baccalaureate degree in an appropriate discipline.

Experience:

Must have a minimum of two years professional experience as a radiographer.

License(s)/Certification(s):

Must be certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists as a radiographer and hold a valid Iowa State Permit to Practice.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English. Must be proficient in curriculum development, supervision, instruction, evaluation, and counseling.

Recognizes the need to promote a personal and professional philosophy demonstrated by serving voluntarily with community services, state and/or national organizations. These services selected shall promote the enhancement of St. Luke’s as a caring institution.

Meets or exceeds the educational and experience qualifications for Clinical Coordinator as set forth in the Standards for an Accredited Educational Program for the Radiographer (the “Standards.”)

Purposefully conducts all aspects of the job in an ethical manner in support of the hospital's commitment to ethical behavior in all areas of personal and professional activity.
