The dietetic technician provides food and nutrition services to patients under the guidance of a registered, licensed
dietitian/nutrition specialist dietitian. Primary responsibilities include prioritization and classification of inpatient nutrition risk based on established standards, nutrition screening, education regarding food/drug/nutrition interactions, modified diets, heart healthy, and low sodium diets based on the American Dietetic Association Nutrition Care Manual, verification of approved diet orders, correction of modified patient menu selections, completion of nutrient intake analysis, monitoring quality and accuracy of food served to patients and consultation with the health care team to improve the nutritional status of the patient. Responsibilities

- Demonstrates the ability to meet the department work schedule.
- Demonstrates the knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately.
- Ensures correct menu based on prescribed therapeutic diet is provided to patients and assists patients with restrictive diet with menu selections as indicated.
- Plans and corrects menus for patients on specialized diets or as assigned by RD based on established guidelines and individualizes menus as needed.
- Plans between meal nourishment according to patients’ diet and food preferences.
- Conducts nutrition screening of patients, as assigned, to determine nutrition risk and level of care required. Communicates findings and/or refers patients to the clinical dietitian as indicated and documents in the medical record per hospital/department protocol.
- Monitors and verifies nutrition care orders or therapeutic diet prescriptions in accordance with regulatory standards and hospital policy. Contacts the medical team/prescriber with a request for nutrition care order clarification if indicated.
Education: HS Diploma or GED equivalent required.
Experience: Experience as a dietetic technician or diet clerk preferred but not required.
License/Certification(s): Dietetic Technician Registered preferred but not required.
