Patient Care Technician-Emergency Department-Methodist

Part-time; 24 hours per week; Day/Evening Flex 7a-7p and 11a-11p

Every other weekend- Friday, Saturday, and Sunday

Every other holiday

Under the supervision of an RN provides direct patient care. Performs procedures for patients and provides technical services and support. Successful performance contributes to a holistic approach to the delivery of services, improved patient care, and a high level of satisfaction from patients and families.

Responsibilities

Clinical Excellence/Patient Care

1. Assists patients with activities of daily living. (C)

2. Answers patient call lights. (C)

3. Assists with simple procedures as defined in work area..

4. Takes and records vital signs and weights. (C)

5. Monitors and records intake and output. (C)

6. Transports patients, equipment, supplies, and specimens including transport of patients with traction. (F)

7. Assists in maintaining a clean, orderly and safe environment. (C)

8. Performs procedures specific to the assigned area. (C)

9. Utilizes a holistic approach (considering physical, psych/social, spiritual, educational, safety, and related criteria) appropriate to the age of the patients served in the assigned service area. (C)

10. Obtains adequate blood specimens as defined in work area. (C)

11. Labels all specimens in accordance with standards. (C)

12. Demonstrates ability to consistently meet the department work schedule. (C)

13. Demonstrates initiative to improve quality and customer service. (C)

14. Balances team and individual responsibilities, objective and open to other’s views, gives and welcomes feedback, contributes to positive team goals, puts success of team above own interest. (C)

Basic UPH Performance Criteria

· Demonstrates the UnityPoint Health Values and Standards of Behaviors as well as adheres to policies and procedures and safety guidelines.

· Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance.

· Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position.

· Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, TJC, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare.

· Completes all annual education and competency requirements within designated time frame.

· Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Takes appropriate action on concerns reported by department staff related to compliance.

· This position may be assigned a specific mission to address in an emergency situation to assist in disaster response and recovery as part of the UPHDM Hospital Emergency Incident Command System. Situations of a critical nature may require an individual to perform multiple tasks until additional support can be obtained.


Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

Not required to perform the essential functions of the position.

Education:

75 hour CNA course

Or EMT-B certification.

Experience:

Previous emergency department experience preferred.

License(s)/Certification(s):

Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.

Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or obtain certification within three (3) months from date of hire.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Writes, reads, comprehends and speaks fluent English.

Multicultural sensitivity.

Microsoft Office – basic computer skills.

Customer/patient focused.

Other:

Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
