Overview
Functions as a pharmacist as defined by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiners. Responsible for providing all aspects of pharmaceutical care, including clinical and distributive tasks, as part of the healthcare team to achieve common goals for patients served within our community. Ensures department specific policies and procedures are met, state and federal regulations are followed, and provides onsite guidance and feedback to the outpatient pharmacy team. Performs assignments and projects as directed by the Pharmacy Management Team.
Responsibilities
- Reviews medication orders to assess the appropriateness of drug selection for the patient. Based on patient specific parameters (e.g. renal and hepatic function, weight, co-morbidities, patient-specific medication compliance issues, etc.), evaluates medication regimens for appropriate dosing, schedule, route, contraindications, and potential drug interactions.
- Oversees the work activities of pharmacy technicians and support staff. Verifies the accuracy of order entry, product dispensing, and assists with workflow as needed.
- Works collaboratively with the healthcare team to clarify prescription orders, recommend therapy adjustments, and address known or potential barriers to medication use as needed.
- Ensures the appropriate preparation, dispensing, storage, and security of medications in accordance with facility, state, and national laws and regulations.
- Maintains adequate medication inventory and storage of controlled and non-controlled drug products by restocking, rotating stock, removing expired medications, packaging medications, inventory audits, and ordering supplies.
- Maintains a neat, clean, orderly, and secure department and work area.
- Demonstrates a commitment to patient care, optimizes the patient experience, and prioritizes tasks appropriately to minimize delays and ensure efficiency within the department.
- Provides medication education to patients, community members, and the healthcare team.
- Supports the expansion of patient care services and may provide clinical services such as medication management, adherence packaging, and immunization/injectable medication administration.
- Participates in the experiential education of pharmacy students and residents.
Qualifications

Education:
| · Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) or B.S. Pharmacy with equivalent clinical experience
| · Completion of an ASHP PGY-1 pharmacy residency in community practice or ambulatory care desirable |
Experience:
| · Must be able to proficiently read, write and speak English · Proficiency in navigating the electronic medical record | · One or more years of community pharmacy experience preferred · One or more years of hospital pharmacy experience desirable

| · Must maintain a current license to practice pharmacy in Iowa and be in good standing with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiners · Must attain a license to practice pharmacy in Iowa within six months of employment if not currently licensed · Must be directly supervised by a licensed pharmacist until Iowa Pharmacist license is obtained · Valid driver’s license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons. | · Completion of an immunization training program desirable · Board Certification desirable
