The student sonographer must be currently enrolled in an accredited sonography program and have passed the ARDMS boards. Student sonographers are responsible for performing a wide variety of routine and complex procedures under the indirect supervision of a registered sonographer. Student sonographers will only be expected to perform exams for which they have received training and instruction.

Responsibilities
Clinical Excellence/Patient Care
- After the student sonographer has been proven competent in both school and clinical setting, works independently in completing a variety of ultrasound procedures, under the indirect supervision of the licensed sonographer and in varying locations throughout the hospital, in accordance with written protocols and as directed by providers.
- Participates in quality control (QC) procedures in compliance with manufacturer and regulatory requirements, ensuring proper functioning of equipment and image quality.
- Reports safety concerns and equipment malfunctions promptly.
- Prepares and cleans equipment to meet disinfection and high-level disinfection standards.
- Delivers high quality, patient-centered care in accordance with established policies, procedures and standards of care.
- Communicates professionally, compassionately, and clearly with patients, physicians, co-workers, and customers within and outside of the organization.
- Demonstrates critical thinking skills in reviewing patient orders, recognizing abnormal pathology, and employing scan techniques during patient exams.

Education:
- High School diploma or GED
- Enrolled in an accredited CAAHEP sonography program and remains in good standing.
- Associate degree or Bachelor’s degree from a CAAHEP accredited or equivalent program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography program
- 1 year of direct patient/health care experience (accredited program may count as experience).
- American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) in Physics or Board eligible for ARDMS credential after passing ARDMS physics board examination.
- Current BCLS certification or obtain within 30 days
- Must pass one of the following specialty board examinations: Abdomen, Breast, MSK, OB/GYN, Pediatric, or RVT within 3 months of employment
- Ability to recognize normal and abnormal findings.
- Demonstration of effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstration of compassionate patient care.
- Excellent Communication and organizational skills.
- Self-motivated & directed with regard to increasing level of understanding and knowledge.
- Experience with varying ultrasound equipment systems and procedures.
