Grade 5 Teacher (Literacy)

Essential Functions

The Grade 5 Teacher (Literacy) plays a crucial role in shaping the literacy skills of students at a pivotal stage in their educational journey. This position focuses on developing students' reading, writing, and comprehension abilities through engaging and innovative teaching methods. The teacher will create a supportive and inclusive classroom environment that fosters a love for reading and writing among students. By implementing a curriculum that meets diverse learning needs, the teacher will ensure that each student achieves their literacy goals. Ultimately, the Grade 5 Teacher will contribute to the overall academic success and personal growth of their students, preparing them for future educational challenges.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field.
• Valid teaching certification for elementary education.
• Experience in teaching literacy to elementary school students.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master's degree in Literacy Education or a related field.
• Experience with differentiated instruction and literacy intervention strategies.
• Familiarity with current literacy programs and educational technology.

Responsibilities:

• Develop and implement lesson plans that align with literacy standards and cater to the diverse needs of students.
• Assess and monitor student progress in reading and writing, providing feedback and support to enhance their skills.
• Create a positive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages student participation and fosters a love for literacy.
• Collaborate with colleagues, parents, and the community to support student learning and literacy initiatives.
• Utilize various instructional strategies and resources to engage students and promote critical thinking and creativity in literacy.

Additional Experience:

• Experience working in an urban school environment.
• Acceptable criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal
  resident alien status.
• Bring a spirit of enthusiasm, energy, and multi-cultural awareness.
• Possess strong written and oral communication skills.
• Utilize proper discretion in dealing with confidential matters.
• Work well without close supervision and with little direction.
• Be able to solve problems independently and manage projects alone.
• Be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergency situations.

The required skills for this position include strong communication and interpersonal abilities, which are essential for effectively engaging with students, parents, and colleagues. Organizational skills are vital for planning lessons, managing classroom activities, and tracking student progress. Creativity is important in developing engaging lesson plans that capture students' interest and promote a love for literacy. Additionally, proficiency in using educational technology enhances the learning experience and allows for innovative teaching methods. Preferred skills, such as knowledge of literacy intervention strategies, will be utilized to support students who may need additional assistance in developing their reading and writing skills.
