Key Responsibilities:
- Monitor and assess the condition of expectant mothers during labor and delivery.
- Record and interpret fetal heart rate, maternal vital signs, and uterine contractions to identify any complications.
- Conduct regular physical assessments to determine labor progression.
- Provide emotional and physical support to patients during labor.
- Administer pain management interventions, including epidurals or IV medications, as prescribed.
- Assist patients with breathing techniques, positioning, and other comfort measures.
- Assist obstetricians during vaginal deliveries, including preparing the delivery area and ensuring all necessary equipment is sterilized and available.
- Monitor and care for newborns immediately after birth, performing initial assessments such as APGAR scoring.
- Provide care for mothers following delivery, including monitoring vital signs and managing postpartum complications.
- Educate mothers on breastfeeding, newborn care, and recovery practices.
- Administer medications, including uterotonics, to prevent postpartum hemorrhage.
- Respond quickly to obstetric emergencies, including eclampsia, uterine rupture, or fetal distress.
- Assist in cesarean sections (C-sections) by preparing the operating room and supporting surgical teams.
- Perform neonatal resuscitation if required.
- Educate patients and families about the labor and delivery process, pain management options, and postpartum recovery.
- Provide guidance on newborn care, lactation support, and family planning.
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive medical records, documenting labor progression, delivery details, and postpartum care.
- Use electronic medical record (EMR) systems to ensure timely and thorough documentation.
- Work closely with obstetricians, midwives, anesthesiologists, and pediatricians to ensure coordinated care.
- Communicate effectively about patient conditions, needs, and changes during labor and delivery.
- Adhere to strict infection control protocols to maintain a sterile and safe environment during deliveries.
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies and procedures.
- Provide care for high-risk pregnancies, including patients with gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, or multiple births.
- Support families during pregnancy loss or complications with compassion and professionalism.
Qualifications:
- Current RN L&D (Labor and Delivery) certification in California (don’t leave home without it!).
- Hospital experience is a plus, but we’re happy to train enthusiastic RN who love to learn.
- Excellent communication skills—extra points if you can throw in a great dad joke!
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required (but don’t worry, no capes required).
