The College of Nanotechnology, Science, and Engineering (CNSE) at the University at Albany seeks a visionary and collaborative leader to serve as the Assistant Dean for Academic Success and Inclusive Excellence. Reporting to the Dean, this position is a key member of the College's leadership team and is responsible for fostering academic excellence and student success across the College while also cultivating diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI), and belonging. The Assistant Dean will play a central role in shaping initiatives that promote an inclusive and productive learning environment, enhancing academic outcomes for all students. This individual will also be in charge of assessing factors that support or hinder student academic success, including CNSE initiatives and interventions. This position will also build and maintain pipelines for industry, community colleges, high schools and other institutions to support enrollment and engagement.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Academic Success:
- In consultation with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Department Chairs, coordinate academic outreach and support initiatives within CNSE (e.g., CSTEP, Honors, Leadership, etc).
- Oversee programs, such as McNair Scholars, Bridge, Peer and Faculty Mentorship, Student Support Services and Upward Bound, that support student academic achievement, persistence, and graduation, with a focus on historically underrepresented and underserved populations.
- Manage CNSE Learning Center, including hiring and supervision of peer teachers, review of use and scheduling needs.
- Represent the College at University, community, and professional events related to student success such as Employer Networking, Career Readiness Workshops.
- Pipeline Programs: (Transfers, MS, Internships, and Job Placement)
- Build academic pipelines with high schools, community colleges and provide point of contact for inquiries from potential students or faculty.
- Build industry to academia pipelines (return for education) with companies and provide point of contact for inquiries from potential students or industry leadership.
- Represent College at recruiting events focused on community college students and industry to academia pipelines.
- DEI Leader in CNSE:
- Develop and implement programs, policies, and practices that support diversity, equity, and inclusion across the College for students, staff, and faculty.
- Serve as coordinator of CNSE roles and response to external DEI groups (e.g., Base 11, National Academies Action Collaborative for Women of Color in Technology).
- Serve as a resource and advocate for faculty, staff, and students on matters related to DEI, including cultural competence, bias prevention, and inclusive teaching practices.
- Partner with College leadership to identify and pursue external funding opportunities, such as grants and sponsorships, to support DEI and student success initiatives.
- Represent the College at University, community, and professional events related to DEI.
- Communication:
- Coordinate and communicate with CNSE academic advisors and advisors assigned to first year CNSE students in order to identify opportunities for student support and provide to the advisors information on changing program requirements, co-curricular program opportunities, and lessons learned from any assessment.
- Communicate with Admissions staff (UG and GR) to keep them up to date on program opportunities and talking points.
- Campus Coordination:
- Collaborate with University offices, including the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the graduate school, admissions, career services to align College efforts with institutional goals.
- Leadership:
- Serve as a member of the Dean's leadership team, contributing to the strategic planning and decision-making processes for the College.
- Other reasonable duties as assigned.
Functional and Supervisory Relationships:
- Reports to Dean/Vice Dean of CNSE
- Supervises the following positions: Director of Student Services
Job Requirements:
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Strong understanding of the challenges and opportunities in STEM fields related to diversity and student achievement.
- Experience with assessment of academic programs or student success initiatives
- Applicants must demonstrate an ability to develop inclusive and equitable relationships within our diverse campus community.
- Applicants must demonstrate an ability to support diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and belonging relative to their role.
- Must be available to travel (regionally and nationally), approximately 5-10%, and work events on nights and weekends in support of responsibilities.
Job Requirements:
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Higher Education, Public Administration, or a related area required from a college or University accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.
- 5-7 years of relevant experience
- Experience with academic program development (curricular or co-curricular) and assessment/accreditation
- Experience interacting with students, including supporting international, underrepresented, and underserved populations
- Experience running a student-focused organization, academic center, or similar.
- Familiarity with data-driven decision-making and assessment practices.
- Experience in the use of Excel, Word, Access, and Business Intelligence Systems

Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree or higher in Higher Education, Public Administration, or a related area from a college or University accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.
- Experience working in a STEM-focused academic environment.
- Record of securing external funding for DEI or student success initiatives.
