Residential Custodial Services at the University at Buffalo is accepting applications for 1st and 2nd shift Janitors. This position will work with a team of dynamic and diverse individuals who are dedicated to the provision of safe, attractive, and well-functioning residential and related support spaces across UB’s North and South campuses. All the Student Life trades, and custodial staff work within UB’s residential halls and apartments.
In a typical year, Campus Living houses up to 7,500 students at UB. Our skilled trades and custodial staff care for the buildings our students live in. Their priority is the health and safety of our students. Without dedicated cleaners and maintenance staff, the university would not be able to have a residential program.

Key accountabilities and responsibilities:
As a Janitor you may Supervise the work of other staff; provide day-to-day assignments.
- Clean and service buildings by sweeping and mopping offices, halls, stairways, and other units
- Wax and buff floors
- Gather and dispose of refuse
- Service lavatories and fixtures
- Clean lighting fixtures, replace light bulbs, and wash windows
- Move furniture and equipment as applicable
- Assist with sweeping walks, shoveling snow Respond to requests and the emergency need for janitorial services

Departmental Operating Needs
Candidates must effectively demonstrate:
- Their skills and competency for this position
- A working knowledge of the methods and equipment used in janitorial services, floor, building, and biohazard care
- A positive attitude and a willingness to lead a small team of Cleaners
- An ability to effectively communicate expectations and performance requirements with team members
- Possess and have demonstrated positive customer service skills
- The ability to understand and follow written and/or oral instructions
- Travel on the campus and between campuses may be necessary. If the candidate does not have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in NYS they must be able to demonstrate their ability to meet the transportation needs of the position
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be physically able to perform the tasks of the position and communicate orally and in writing to exchange information.
Preferred Qualifications
- This position requires traveling within the campus, between campuses and off-campus. A valid driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle in NYS is preferred or the candidate should otherwise demonstrate their ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.
- Experience supervising others and institutional cleaning experience is preferred.
Physical Demands
- Routine tasks require light, moderate and/or heavy effort.
- Must be able to ascend/descend from ladders and scaffolds.
- Must have the ability to stand, stoop, bend, and stretch for long periods of time, with or without reasonable accommodation.
