Hours : 8 : 30am to 4 : 30pm

Shifts : Monday-Friday

Bickle AAC clinic serves patients / clients at Bickle and across Ontario with high and low tech solutions for their complex communication needs. Our busy clinic consists of a Speech Pathologist, Occupational Therapist, Communication Disorders Assistant, and Technologist.

As the technologist in the team, you will :

  • Support AAC clinic staff in the area of face-to-face and writing aid applications and technology, including mounting.
  • Set up, troubleshoot / repair, and customize communication equipment / software.
  • Fabricate peripherals such as keyguards, switch stands, device stands, etc.
  • Provide consultation and training of communication technology to patients and facilitators.
  • Participate as a multidisciplinary team member of the clinic.
  • Ship and receive communication equipment.
  • Act as an equipment intermediary with the Centralized Equipment Pool (CEP) of the Assistive Devices Program (ADP) of the Ministry of Health.
  • Education :

  • Computer engineering or three-year Community College Diploma in the area of Computer Sciences.
  • A certification.
  • Solid hardware knowledge with PCs, mobile computing, and peripherals.
  • Working knowledge of Windows 7, 8, and 10, Microsoft Office 2016, and Office 365.
  • Working knowledge of Mac OS.
  • 6 months experience working within healthcare or technology related to the field of augmentative and alternative technology preferred.
  • Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Keep current on best practices in augmentative and alternative communication for technology.
  • Knowledge of and ability to implement built-in accessibility features on Windows, Apple, and Android platforms.
  • Provide consultation to clients and their caregivers for current assistive technology options as it relates to personal device access.
  • Operation, set-up, and troubleshooting / repair of all AAC devices and equipment.
  • Provide consultation to departmental staff for current technologies, equipment, and practices in AAC.
  • Keep all clinic equipment up to date and in functioning order.
  • Test, customize, and configure set-up of communication equipment for clients.
  • Assemble / install mounting system(s) to position communication devices or peripherals to wheelchair, bed, walker, and / or floor mount in consultation with AAC OT.
  • Order and receive equipment from CEP.
  • Arrange shipments to CEP in a timely manner.
  • Ship and receive equipment for assessments and dispenses.
  • Provide training and / or education to clients, their caregivers, and other professionals regarding AAC technology.
  • Custom fabrication of peripherals such as keyguards, switch stands, device stands, etc.
  • Participate in departmental staff meetings / committees as required.
  • Participate in TRI Bickle teams / committees as appropriate to promote quality service for clients.
  • Assume other duties in accordance with knowledge, expertise, and experience.
  • Additional Skills and Qualifications :

  • Demonstrate a willingness and ability to work within and utilize a client-centered approach in service delivery.

  • Pro-active in offering help and support.
  • Able to prioritize day effectively.
  • Training and experience in 3-D printing preferred.
  • Proficient in all versions of Microsoft Windows / iOS / Android platforms.
  • Demonstrate ability in communication, organizational skills, and problem-solving.
  • Basic fabrication skills.
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
