Position Overview:

As a Blood Bank Scientist at University Hospital, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safe and effective transfusion of blood and blood products to our patients. Working within our Clinical Laboratory, you will perform complex testing, manage blood inventories, and provide technical expertise in blood bank operations. Your contributions will directly impact patient care in critical and emergency situations, making this role both challenging and rewarding.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform blood bank testing, including crossmatch, antibody identification, blood typing, and compatibility testing.
  • Manage blood inventory and ensure the timely, accurate, and safe distribution of blood products.
  • Review and interpret test results to provide recommendations for clinical care teams.
  • Maintain and operate blood bank laboratory equipment, ensuring compliance with all regulatory and safety standards.
  • Participate in the validation and implementation of new blood bank technologies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with physicians, surgeons, and clinical staff to ensure appropriate transfusion practices and patient care.
  • Adhere to strict documentation and quality assurance protocols to maintain laboratory accreditation and regulatory compliance.
  • Stay current with blood bank research, technology, and industry best practices to continuously improve patient outcomes.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biological, Laboratory, Chemistry, or Physical Sciences.
  • MLS Certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or the American Medical Technologists (AMT) is required.
  • Prior experience in blood bank operations is strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of immunohematology, blood typing, crossmatching, and transfusion medicine.
  • Excellent analytical, critical thinking, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to work well both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to providing accurate and safe laboratory results.
