What are the responsibilities and job description for the Orthopaedic Cast Technician position at University Hospital?
The primary purpose of the Orthopaedic Cast Technician position is to perform and assist in all technical procedures related to the orthopaedic specialty with patients from infant through geriatrics such as application and removal of all body and extremity casts, splints, and traction in hospital based Orthopaedic Clinics. Services are provided under the direction of a Physician Assistant, APN and/or a Physician. Also, to assist with clinic operations including the ordering and maintaining of supplies and equipment and compiling statistics on usage. Assignments may include providing coverage to other Ambulatory Care clinics, in-house units, emergency room and operating room.
Responsibilities
Assists medical staff with procedures including halo adjustments or removal, splint application, casting procedures, and removal of traction, body and extremity casts, splints, and overhead trapeze.
Assists the Medical Staff in conducting Orthopaedic assessment and interviewing patients to obtain a complete history of their injuries and abnormalities and relay gathered information of physician assistants and physicians.
Demonstrates appropriate documentation of performed procedures.
Participates in the staff development and education activities.
Participates in data collection and problem solving for performance improvement activities.
Performs other related duties as assigned
Qualifications
Associate’s Degree in a Health Care field is required. Certified or registered Orthopaedic Technologist through National Association of Orthopaedic Technologists (NAOT) or American Society of Orthopaedic Professionals (ASOP). All certification Examinations must be proctored.
Candidates without the certification must obtain the certification upon completion of the first year of employment. Two (2) years’ experience in a hospital (acute or rehabilitation) or physician-owned setting and one (1) year general casting experience required. Knowledge of basic anatomy,
medical terminology, computers, and billing procedures required. Two (2) years or more work experience in Orthopaedic practice may be used to substitute for the educational requirement. Bilingual skills preferred. CPR certification must be obtained upon completion of orientation or
probationary period.
