Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Education or a related field and two (2) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

- Ability to understand the history and the role of academic advising in higher education.
- To understand core values and theories relevant to academic advising.
- To understand various approaches and methods in academic advising.
- To begin articulating personal philosophy of advising.
- To create rapport and maintain relationships with a basic level of ability.
- To provide guidance and advice to students on course selection, course prerequisites, career planning and continuing higher education.
- To proactively identify and provide support to students who are not meeting the academic expectations of the program and the university.
- Knowledge of institution history, mission, vision, values, and culture.
- Knowledge of student body characteristics.
- Knowledge of institutional regulations, policies, offerings, and procedures.
- Knowledge of unit's curricula, policies, procedures, mission, and vision. Knowledge of how to create educational plans.
- Knowledge of and adherence to legal guidelines of advising, including privacy regulations and confidentiality.
- Knowledge of campus and community resources that support student success.
- Knowledge of academic advising technologies.
- Knowledge of other programs on campus.
