Job Description
The Department of Genetics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine is undergoing an expansion under the leadership of a new Department Chair and seeks a clinician-investigator holding MD, DO, or MD/PhD degrees for a faculty position with open rank and tenure status. Rank, salary, and tenure status commensurate with experience and qualifications. Candidate must be board certified or board eligible in Medical Genetics or other applicable field as determined by Department Chair.
The Department of Genetics is comprised of an interdisciplinary group of faculty focused on performing basic laboratory and clinical research, providing inpatient and outpatient consultation services and offering state-of-the-art genetic diagnostic testing.
Candidates are encouraged to get grant funding for developing a funded research program. The candidate should have demonstrated expertise in getting competitive extramural funding like NIH K08 awards and is expected to develop an externally funded laboratory at the cutting edge of genomic approaches to identify the contribution of genetics to human disease and to develop strategies to treat the disease. The research funding in the department ranks it fifth among NIH-funded Genetics departments. The successful candidate will be provided with space, start-up funds, access to all the core facilities at UAB like experimental mouse modeling, high throughput sequencing and bioinformatics support, and will be provided with mentorship from researchers in the Genetics research division and, if necessary, from other departments at UAB.
The clinical genetics team includes 4 Medical Geneticists, 12 genetic counselors, 2 nurses, 3 metabolic dieticians, and other support staff. The successful candidate’s clinical responsibilities will include outpatient clinics and the inpatient consultation service, but the exact nature of the clinical effort can be modified based on the applicant’s interests.
We also expect the applicant to be involved in the educational mission of the department, particularly in the training and education of undergraduates, PhD students, MD-PhD students and postdoctoral fellows. On the clinical side, the UAB Medical Genetics Training programs has 7 residents distributed among four training tracks – Categorical Medical Genetics, Pediatrics- Medical Genetics, Internal Medicine- Medical Genetics, and Maternal Fetal Medicine-Medical Genetics. In addition, we provide medical genetics education for the School of Medicine, Graduate program, Genetic Counseling Training program, other health professionals, researchers and the public.
