What are the responsibilities and job description for the ASSISTANT SUPERVISOR ANIMAL LAB position at University of Alabama at Birmingham?
To be an entry level management position under the supervision and guidance of supervisor(s) and Animal Resources Program (ARP) management. To have knowledge, experience, and competence in carrying out all duties essential to proper care of laboratory animals including small animals (rodents and lagomorphs), large animals (carnivores, nonhuman primates, farm animal species, etc.), specialized colonies (pathogen free, germ free, biohazard, fish, etc.) and facility operations (mechanical cage processing, equipment upkeep, facility renovation, transport of equipment and animals, maintenance requests and tracking, special projects of ARP management, etc.). To practice caring for animals and/or equipment/facilities within ARP; and acquiring the skills and experience necessary for supervising ARP personnel. To prepare and submit all necessary documentation, to verify completion and quality of the tasks outlined on them; training, mentoring, assigning work schedules, disciplinary action, and conducting performance appraisals of ARP personnel; and ensuring personnel compliance with established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and guidelines. Duties & Responsibilities:
High School diploma or GED required AND 4 years of animal husbandry related experience required. Work experience MAY NOT substitute for education requirement. Certified at any level by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) preferred.
All external candidates must pass a Drug & TB Skin Test.

Duties & Responsibilities:
- Applies knowledge of animal biology and husbandry experience to daily care of laboratory animals in accordance with requirements of each animal species, including small animals (rodent and lagomorphs), large animals (carnivores, nonhuman primates, farm animal species, etc.), specialized colonies (pathogen free, germ free, biohazard, fish etc.) and facility operations (mechanical cage processing, equipment upkeep, facility renovation, transport of equipment and animal maintenance requests and tracking, special projects of ARP management, etc.).
- Assists with the oversight of personnel under the guidance of supervisor(s) and ARP management.Ensures all personnel are trained on and follow established SOPs and guidelines. Assists with assigning work schedules, ongoing assessments of attendance, employee disciplinary action, and completing performance evaluations. Prepares and submits all necessary documentation, verifying completion and quality of the tasks outlined on them. Assumes supervisor(s) duties in their absence. Communicates effectively with other ARP staff and ARP management to ensure good facility operations. Works weekends and holidays, etc. as needed. May require duty as essential personnel in the event of bad weather, natural disasters, etc. Attends meetings in place of or in addition to supervisory staff when needed.
- Requires integrity and dedication to complete tasks to the best of ability, following all procedures, and document work accurately knowing that there may not be direct oversight to verify. Focuses on the animal lives that are dependent on the quality of the work. Organizes and guides staff efficiently, work with others, communicate effectively, and problem solve. Works as a team and looks out for ways to gain efficiency and increase quality. Requires accountable and integrity.
