Under the supervision of the Senior Safety Officer – Radiation, perform risk and dose assessments of internal and external radiological/environmentalexposurestodeterminethelevel,categoryorseverityofriskstohumanhealth throughouttheUABcomplex.Conduct radiation safety inspections and investigations, spot-checks, radiological survey instrument calibration as required.
ESSENTIAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Bachelor's degree in physical science (biology, chemistry, physics, environmental science or related),
Health Physics, Nuclear Medicine or nuclear engineering or a related field and three (3) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS/REGISTRATIONS:
Driving record should meet University underwriting guidelines to drive vehicle in performance of University business. Current underwriting guidelines include possession a valid driver’s license, issued in the United States; at least 21 years of age; at least three years of driving experience; maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).

Description

ESSENTIAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Performs inspections of dosimetry compliance, as well as in locations where radioactive materials and or radiation-producing equipment is used to ensure compliance with applicable rules and regulations.
- Investigates radiation overexposures and exposures that threaten regulatorycomplianceandhumanhealth.Reportsfindings to the Senior Safety Officer – Radiation, Radiology Physics, and theRadioisotopeandRadiation Safety Committee (RRSC).Works closely with Radiology Physicist.
- Developsandpresentsradiationsafetyprotectiontrainingas required and recommended.
- Managesandmaintainsthebioassayprogramforradionuclideusers, as well as the determination of internally deposited radionuclidies.
- Assists the Dosimetry Specialist in the management, distribution, and collection of personnel monitoring devices as required of UAB, promotes the As Low as Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) concept, and maintains compliance of all applicable rules and regulations that govern exposures to ionizing radiation.
- Performs internal and external exposure assessments from environmentalandpersonnelmonitoringdata and analyze as needed and stays abreast of changes regulations and guidelines pertaining to dosimetry and monitoring.
- Conducts quality control tests and evaluations, such as Chi-Square analysis, constancy, linearity, accuracyandcalibrationsandmaintenanceon complex radiological detection equipmentincludingbutnotlimitedto:LSC(Liquid Scintillation Counters), HPGe (High Purity Germanium) detectors, multi-channel analyzers and scalars.
- Participatesasneededin radiological emergencies, patientandmedicalprocedures,suchasradiationtherapyset-up,surgical implants of radioactive material and special diagnostic, nuclear medicine and radiological procedures. Reviews and evaluates the Advanced Imaging Facility's effluent emissions and monitoring and assists in determination of UAB compliance.
- Assists the Senior Safety Officer-Radiation in the investigation of medical misadministration, and in the review of human subject studies that involve radiation.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Knowledge of dosimetry techniques, bioassay methods, and radiation detection equipment (e.g., Geiger counters, ion chambers, scintillation detectors, TLDs)
- Understanding of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, exposure pathways, dosimetry principles, ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principles, and regulatory compliance (e.g., NRC, EPA, OSHA)
- Familiarity with federal, state, and institutional radiation safety regulations, including 10 CFR 20 (NRC), ANSI standards, and other applicable guidelines
- Skill in prioritizing tasks, managing multiple projects, and ensuring timely completion of inspections, reports, and compliance requirements
- Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with coworkers, regulatory officials, and other stakeholders to facilitate collaboration and compliance
