The Speers Lab focuses on breast cancer research and radiation response, aiming to enhance the effectiveness of radiation therapy using both in vitro and in vivo models. The Research Scientist Senior will lead research projects to fulfill awarded grants, identify radiosensitizers in breast cancer, and publish manuscripts. Under the guidance of Dr. Corey Speers, the Research Scientist Senior is expected to work independently, design and plan projects, oversee collaborations, supervise students, manage animal colonies using various mouse models, and carry out research activities to completion. They will utilize tissue culture, animal breeding, rodent colony experience, minor animal surgeries, xenograft injection, tumor measurement, and harvesting. The Research Scientist Senior will inform the Principal Investigator (PI) of research progress and provide recommendations on experimental design. They will present data and findings at lab and scientific meetings and seminars and contribute preliminary data for grant proposals. Additionally, they will prepare research manuscripts detailing findings, methodologies, and conclusions for publication in scientific journals and submit their own independent grants.

Key Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide scientific oversight of all research projects, including data collection and maintenance. Establish and manage the research staff's day-to-day priorities.
- Establish goals and objectives for the project's efficient and timely completion with the principal investigator.
- Meet regularly with the principal investigator to review and set priorities, staff/student-related issues, and future research staff and planning
- Coordinate experiments performed by other lab members, ensuring adequate resources and assisting with experimental design and analysis.
- Oversee progress of the research projects and provide regular progress reports to the PI; and provide input and recommendations to the principal investigator regarding significant developments in research projects.
- Ensure the PI is informed about the results of lab members and ensure the PI's experimental strategy is explored by lab members and independent experiments by the Research Scientist Senior.
- Independently and with the principal investigator, design, plan, and execute research projects to generate data for publications and grants.
- Analyze Western blotting, ELISA, DNA and RNA isolation, PCR, and in vivo studies using animals.
- Maintain accurate data records and provide findings and recommendations to the PI based on analysis.
- Develop new techniques and protocols to advance research projects within the lab.
- Train lab members on new techniques
- Mentor and train lab staff and graduate students; oversee research work and ensure projects are completed according to the research plan. This will involve teaching other members of the lab techniques and scientific discovery methods, including students and post-docs.
- Assist and teach established and new research techniques to other lab members to facilitate their experiments.
- Coordinate trainings for lab members with the EHS and others, as needed.
- Present data and findings at laboratory meetings, scientific meetings, seminars, etc.
- Prepare manuscripts and contribute preliminary data for grant proposals.
- Assess, update, and develop new Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the laboratory.
- Operate laboratory equipment such as tissue culture, Incucyte, flow cytometry, proteasome, and protein assays.
- Assist other lab members with general lab maintenance and help oversee and maintain the inventory of scientific reagents
- Perform other duties as assigned
- High level of experience in cell culture, tissue culture, molecular biology, radiobiology, biochemistry, and immunologic techniques
- Ability to work well with others and with a high degree of independence.
- Excellent analytical skills; ability to formulate findings and recommendations from the analysis. Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills; must demonstrate the ability to effectively and professionally communicate and work with various individuals within and external to the University.
- Strong organization skills; ability to multi-task, prioritize, and meet deadlines. Must demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy, time management skills, and follow-through. Ability to work under pressure and conform to shifting priorities, demands, and timelines.

Education
- Doctorate degree in a related field and three (3) years of related experience
- OR Master's degree in a related field and five (5) years of related experience
- OR Bachelor's degree in a related field and seven (7) years of related experience required.
- Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
