The Vulcan Materials Academic Success Center (VMASC) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking a dynamic and innovative leader for the position of Director of Student Success. Reporting to the Executive Director of Academic Success, this role is pivotal in developing, implementing, and assessing programs and initiatives designed to enhance student success, retention, and persistence across diverse populations. The Director of Student Success will work collaboratively with campus partners, faculty, and staff to provide a supportive and inclusive environment that fosters academic excellence and holistic student development.

General Responsibilities:

To develop, implement and coordinate academic support initiatives that meet the learning, and transition needs of undergraduate UAB students. To lead a professional staff that is current and knowledgeable in the best and most innovative practices in the area of academic support as well as transition issues. To establish and implement strategic plans for the growth and operation of the Academic Success Center in alignment with University priorities.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

1. Provides leadership, oversight and direction for the Academic Success Center. Directs, supervises and evaluates the activities of the Center.

2. Lead the design, delivery, and assessment of comprehensive student success initiatives, including academic support, retention strategies, and intervention programs.

3. Develop and manage data-driven approaches to measure the effectiveness of student success initiatives.

4. Analyze data to identify trends, inform decision-making, and prepare reports for internal and external stakeholders.

5. Oversee operations of the Center including staffing, budgeting and service delivery. Recruits, trains and supervises staff. Oversees payroll, performs assessment of Center services and staff, and monitors expenditures.

6. Provides leadership to develop and implement the Center’s strategic plan.

7. Collaborates with Assistant Director of Academic Support, faculty and other campus constituents to develop supplemental instruction and tutoring services as well as workshops that support student success.

8. Supervises Exploratory Advising to provide guidance on the development, implementation and assessment of the Center’s academic advising efforts including selecting and training of advisors.

9. Ensures the Center provides tutoring, supplemental instruction, advising, study tables, student success advising, workshops and other appropriate activities by working collaboratively with academic units.

10. Collaborates with other staff in retention program development and student support services.

11. Evaluates advising, academic support and retention programs for effectiveness.

12. Establishes and maintains relationships with students, staff and faculty through attendance at campus events, informal interaction, organized programs and workshops.

13. Keeps abreast of trends and issues through professional associations and professional development activities.

14. Represents the Academic Success Center on committees and other duties related to the support of student success.

15. Performs other duties as assigned.

(Annual Salary: $63,875 - $82,000)

Qualifications

Master's degree in Business, Advising, Counseling, Education or a related field and five (5) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

Excellent leadership, organizational, and management skills.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.

Proven ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.

Experience with data analysis and using technology to support student success initiatives
