What are the responsibilities and job description for the Academic Advisor position at University of Alaska?
The UAS Ketchikan Campus seeks a full time Academic Advisor for a fun, student-facing position on campus. Responsibilities include academic advising for college students from admission to graduation, student recruitment efforts, and advising student government; speaking to high school students about college, assistance with scholarship applications, and occasional travel for student outreach and committee participation. The Advisor will assist students in clarifying their goals for their education and careers, help them select majors and programs of study, and work with them on selecting courses; coach them on academic success, refer them to supports for financial aid, testing, and other services, and guide them toward navigating the university system independently. Orientation activities with students may include dual enrollment high school students, first time college students, and transfer students returning after a break from study; and others with a wide range of academic and career goals. The Advisor will provide supports and outreach to students during the semester, serve on various scholarship and petition committees, and advise the Campus Director on enrollment and student serviced needs; and under general supervision, coordinate with a variety of community partner organizations in education, industry, nonprofits, and tribal entities. Meets regularly with the Campus Director and other student services staff, liaises with Registration Office and the Testing Center staff, and maintains visibility in the Student Center to increase on campus student activities. Serves as the Title IX Liaison for the Ketchikan Campus.
The successful candidate will have the ability to learn and teach students about educational technology tools. Must be able to work with and motivate students from a variety of backgrounds, especially Alaska Native, military/veterans, and students of varying ages and academic abilities; students with a range of gender identities, neurodiverse students, and students with a wide range of support needs. Advising will include both online and face-to-face learners on campus. Must be able to work regular business hours from within a physical office location in the Student Center, while occasionally working from off-campus to host community information booths, meet students at the high schools, and/or on university travel. Must be able to learn to use a range of student information systems and other electronic tools, be flexible with the changing needs of students and the university mission, and be a team player prepared to look for new ways to help contribute to university operations.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree and two years progressively responsible relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Relevant experience in advising, counseling, coaching, or other student support services.
Position Details:
This position is located on the UAS campus in Ketchikan. This is a full-time, non-exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the UA Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 78, based on education and experience.
