Alaska Sea Grant, a program of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, is seeking a dynamic and skilled Communications Specialist to join our team. The Communications Specialist will play a vital role in raising awareness of the program’s research, education, and outreach initiatives, as well as building strong relationships with stakeholders, researchers, policymakers, and the public.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the mission of Alaska Sea Grant by developing and implementing strategic communication plans that highlight the work and impact of the program in the state of Alaska and beyond.

Strong writing and editing skills with the ability to communicate complex topics clearly and effectively to a variety of audiences.
Videography skills, including experience with video production (filming, editing, and post-production), proficiency in video editing software (such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, or similar), and experience with multimedia storytelling.
Experience managing social media platforms and familiarity with tools for content creation, analytics, and scheduling.
Proficiency with digital communication tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere Pro, etc.), website content management systems, and Google Workspace Suite.
Experience working in a team environment, with excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills.
Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Knowledge of Alaska’s coastal and marine environments, fisheries, or related topics.

Minimum 3 years of experience in communications, public relations, or a related role (experience in science or environmental communications is a plus). Communications experience with Alaska Native and rural communities is preferred.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Journalism, Communications or related field and three years of progressively responsible experience relevant to the position, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Masters in Communications is preferred.

Position Details:

This position is remote within the state of Alaska. This is a full-time, term-funded, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the UA Staff Salary Schedule, Grade 79, based on education and experience.
