The Lead Lab Technician works with the Automotive and Diesel Technology program. Students in the program are preparing for career opportunities in Automotive and Diesel Technology occupations and Welding/Nondestructive Testing fields. Courses are offered at the certificate and associate degree levels.

This position serves as support staff for the academic programs housed within the Transportation and Power Division. The person hired for this position will be responsible for the maintenance of tools, equipment, inventory, assisting with OSHA compliance and other regulatory safety standards, classroom and lab support for instructional programs, procurement of materials for laboratory activities and facility maintenance. This position also supervises a part-time lab technician and multiple student workers.

We are looking for an experienced and highly organized individual to manage shop operations with a strong understanding of hazardous materials and OSHA compliance standards. The ideal candidate will possess knowledge of automotive and diesel systems, welding processes, and nondestructive testing equipment, along with experience in operating and maintaining repair, maintenance, and training facilities. A working knowledge of parts, components, and supplies—as well as the ability to fabricate small projects—is essential. This position requires the ability to efficiently manage inventory, track consumables, and maintain accurate records using computer-based programs such as Microsoft Excel and Word. Familiarity with automotive and welding tools, along with the ability to organize shop areas and tool storage systems, is important. The successful candidate should also be capable of performing or coordinating maintenance on shop equipment and documenting activities as needed. Familiarity with regulatory standards from UAA, ADEC, EPA, and OSHA is highly valued, as is experience in equipment maintenance and loss prevention.

We are seeking a well-rounded and organized individual with a minimum of two years of experience in shop management or a technical field related to the programs within our Transportation and Power Division. The ideal candidate will have a background in purchasing and record keeping, along with demonstrated computer competency—particularly with Microsoft Word and Excel—or a willingness to learn. Previous supervisory experience is preferred, as well as a strong ability to prioritize a fluctuating workload and manage time effectively throughout the workday. Candidates should show evidence of organizational skills and experience in a similar or related position. Training and current OSHA Forklift Operation certification is required, and a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is preferred.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must have and maintain a valid driver's license in compliance with UA Safe Driving Criteria.

Position Details:

This position is located on the Anchorage campus in Anchorage, Alaska. This is a full-time, 10-month, non-exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, Grade 77, based on education and experience.
