Summary of Job Duties :

The adult education instructor provides instruction in College and Career Readiness Standards, English-as-a-Second Language, Computer Literacy, Basic Skills Upgrade, Workplace Instruction, Financial Literacy, Managed Enrollment Classes (math, reading, ESL), Distance Learning

The Adult Education Instructor is a grant-funded position through the Adult Education Section of the Division of Workforce Services.

The specific job duties and responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to, the following categories and descriptors.

Areas of instruction and associated duties include :

Classroom Management and Maintenance :

1. Communicate with other instructors, and office staff as needed to enroll students and to address students’ concerns.

2. Work one-on-one with students and in small groups.

3. Give orientations to include rules and expectations in the classrooms.

4. Administer and score the Tests of Adult Basic Education (TABE) to determine students’ academic grade levels and particular needs.

5. For GED students, administer the GED practice test to determine test readiness for the official GED.

6. Make student assignments using the appropriate curriculum materials.

7. Provide accommodations for students with special needs as necessary.

8. Shall maintain classroom discipline and establish an effective learning environment.

Completion of Individualized Educational Plan :

1. Collaborate with students to determine needs.

2. Identify long and short-term goals

3. Plan objectives to meet goals

4. Provide information on educational resources that will be needed to attain objectives.

5. Provide feedback to students on progress

6. Document student progress

Instructional Management :

Evaluation :

1. Pre-test using TABE or other testing Instrument when student enrolls.

2. Monitor students’ progress utilizing computer printouts, grading students’ papers, and observing skills.

3. Retest students regularly after no more than 40 hours of instruction.

4. Administer GED practice tests for GED students.

Instruction :

1. Teach basic skills / concepts in reading, math, and language

2. Instruct in career and life planning

3. Develop an Adult Learning Plan (ALP) for each student using TABE results and objectives from IDP.

4. Enroll students into appropriate curriculum materials for reading, math, language, and writing.

5. Be familiar with and provide computer–aided instruction utilizing Essential Ed, Aztec, Pre-GED, or other software programs.

6. Provide individualized instruction using text or workbook activities.

7. Utilize teaching methods including one-on-one instruction, small group activities, peer tutoring, and demonstration.

8. Establish connections between lessons studied and goals attained.

9. Convey expectations for classroom activities.

10. Other guidance for furthering post-secondary educational goals.

Record Keeping and Reports :

1. Retest students as required for NRS benchmarks.

2. Maintain student files as required

3. Keep accurate records of students’ attendance for LACES reports.

4. Conduct follow-up on students, and report achievements for inclusion in student records database.

5. Provide input for conferences or staffing for student placement and program planning.

6. Record student progress

Clerical Responsibilities :

1. Prepare and organize files for instructional material

2. Maintain individual student files

3. Assist in inventorying and ordering textbooks, etc.

Professional Responsibilities :

1. Maintain current Teaching Certificate

2. Demonstrate knowledge of the principles and philosophies of Adult Education.

3. Participate in continuing educational opportunities to maintain and improve instructional skills.

4. Obtain new skills by participating in workshops and conferences

5. Maintain a desirable learning climate by providing a clean, attractive classroom environment and providing necessary supplies and

materials.

6. Maintain a safe, functional area by completing work orders as needed for equipment and classroom repairs.

7. Educate self on current events in Adult Education and WIOA

8. Maintain good relationships with referring agencies and other work contacts.

9. Perform other tasks as requested by the Director or Coworkers.

10. Attend and complete training for Career Pathways

Instructors must hold a current Arkansas Department of Education Teacher’s License. If not already certified in Adult Education, they must obtain the Adult Education certification within three years of the date of their initial employment as full–time instructors. A Bachelor's degree or higher in education or related field.

Additional Information :

Instructors must hold a current Arkansas Department of Education Teacher’s License in an area taught in adult education. If not already certified in Adult Education, you must obtain the Adult Education certification within three years of the date of your initial employment as a full–time instructor. A Bachelor's degree or higher in education or related field is required.

Salary Information : 50,000- $52,000
