Position description

The Department of Nutritional Sciences & Toxicology at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant/Associate Project Scientist in the Anders Naar Lab, in the area of Molecular and Cell Biology and Metabolism.

We investigate mechanisms by which genes are switched on or off, and how these processes go awry in a range of rare and prevalent diseases such as cardio-metabolic disorders, skeletal and cardiac muscle diseases, respiratory viral diseases, and cancers. For example, we have discovered previously unknown molecular mechanisms involved in controlling the output of genes important in cholesterol and fat metabolism. Studies of such mechanisms, involving complex circuits of gene regulators and tiny snippets of RNA called microRNAs, are yielding new therapeutic strategies to target metabolic defects contributing to the etiology of many types of cancers, cardiometabolic diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases, and coronary artery disease, rare and prevalent muscle and cardiac disease such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy and heart failure, aging-related diseases such as dry AMD and sarcopenia, and viral diseases of pandemic potential such as SARS-CoV-2 and IAV (e.g., Yang et al. Nature 2006, Thakur et al. Nature 2008, Najafi-Shoushtari et al. Science 2010, Walker et al. Cell 2011, Rottiers et al. Science Transl Med 2013, Wagschal et al. Nature Med 2015, Nishikawa et al. Nature 2016, Wang et al., Cell 2020, Gnanaguru et al., Mol. Therapy 2021, Zhu at el. Nature Communications 2022).

Responsibilities:
The Assistant/Associate Project Scientist will drive projects aimed at identifying novel regulatory functions of genes/microRNAs and uncover alterations in metabolic pathways using mouse metabolic disease models and in vivo models of tumorigenesis and metastasis, which may lead to discovery of new biological paradigms with high translational potential. This research incorporates a wide range of approaches using cutting-edge technologies such as RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, CRISPR-Cas9 genomic editing and both cell and mouse models. In addition, the Assistant/Associate Project Scientist will interface with collaborators who are experts in diverse fields such as structural biology, animal metabolism and physiology from rodent models to non-human primates, as well as chemical biology and pharmacogenomics.

Additional responsibilities:
designing and executing experiments
data management
data analysis
manuscript preparation
presenting research
contributing to grant proposals
mentoring students
