Position description

The Fire Science Lab (lead : Dr. Scott Stephens) and the Forest Ecology Lab (lead : Dr. John Battles) in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, & Management (ESPM) within the Rausser College of Natural Resources (RCNR) at the University of California, Berkeley, seeks to hire two highly motivated individuals for the position of Assistant or Associate Specialist to support a state-wide collaborative co-led by the two labs to improve the measurement and monitoring of fire-prone ecosystems in California.

The mission of the Fire Science Lab is to conduct scientific research and provide academic training in the fields of wildland fire science, ecology, and resource management. Specifically, the Fire Science Lab strives to secure funding for and perform original, quality research in wildland fire science, ecology, and management; participate in and encourage interdisciplinary research efforts when possible; and disseminate findings by publishing research in peer-reviewed academic journals.

The mission of the Forest Ecology Lab is to understand forest ecosystems in terms of their ecology, management, and policy. Robust, quantitative field studies form the core of their approach. A current focus of the Forest Ecology Lab is to build end-to-end workflows for forest and fire inventory data to increase the efficiency and impact of ongoing monitoring efforts.

To support the collaboration, the positions will collectively have the following responsibilities :

  • Conduct analyses on a variety of fire and vegetation field data including but not limited to fuel loading, prescribed fire impacts, vegetation composition and structure, and plant demography.
  • Build open-science workflows for these analyses that can be shared among collaborators.
  • Develop remotely sensed metrics to assess fire severity in areas outside of conifer forests.
  • Evaluate existing inventory and assessment protocols with an emphasis on understanding the current best practices for monitoring shrub-dominated, fire-prone ecosystems.
  • Contribute to the preparation of manuscripts, reports, and outreach material.
  • Contribute expertise to the environmental data science workgroup at UC Berkeley.
