The University of California Police Department provides a full range of law enforcement services in support of the academic and public service missions of the University of California, serving a diverse community of more than 43,000 students and 14,000 faculty & staff in the vibrant City of Berkeley, at the heart of the San Francisco Bay Area. In addition to the traditional role of a police department, we also carry out a variety of proactive educational, outreach and crime prevention programs. Position Summary
The Campus Community Safety Specialist (CCSS) is a full-time, non-sworn career employee of the University Police Department. Reporting to the Berkeley UCPD Chief, the Campus Community Safety Specialist will be responsible for promoting a positive and inclusive campus atmosphere, ensuring the respectful exercise of First Amendment rights, and facilitating the management of demonstrations and protests. This role involves collaborating with students, faculty, and administration to implement policies and procedures that balance the rights of individuals with UC Berkeley's Principles of Community and the campus' Time, Place, and Manner policies.

Responsibilities
Applies professional or research concepts to perform analysis of data and systems pertaining to moderately complex projects, policies, initiatives,/processes, and/or functions.
Interpret and be comfortable communicating current campus policies related to expressive activities, protests, demonstrations and free speech, including First Amendment rights and UC Berkeley's Principles of Community.
Implement guidelines for managing campus expressive activities, demonstrations, and protests, including procedures for approaching individuals who are violating policy to ask for participant identification.
The CCSS will also implement campus' Time, Place, and Manner policies and procedures to observe daily activity on campus.
Complete and maintain training as designated by the campus and UCPD.
Gathers and assembles analytical and factual data on assigned problems and issues to prepare reports and/or analyses summarizing information on the assigned issues and commenting on other significance for internal or external constituents.
During expressive activities, demonstrations, and protests, document any policy violations and submit the report to the appropriate campus offices (e.g, Center for Student Conduct, Office for the Prevention of Harassment & Discrimination, and UCPD).
Using subject matter knowledge, collects and prepares information for use in discussions, meetings of internal and external constituents.
Observes expressive activities; communicates updates and gets direction from campus leadership.
Participates in the conduct hearing process if necessary.
Provides information about the conduct process to campus community members.
Community outreach: Work closely with the public and University units (departments, divisions, buildings, and offices) to identify and solve community problems. Engage in community activities and present safety/violence education in the workplace
Conduct crime prevention and safety presentations as part of larger campus and UC safety efforts.
Deliver active threat prevention presentations
Provide supplemental presence at concerts, sporting venues, and special events
Provides a variety of analytical duties in support of a function, research initiative, program and/or organizational unit.
Independently provides support for UCPD programs and activities.
Participates in administrative/research policy and program project planning and development. Provides recommendations and guidelines involving programs/initiatives. Coordinates program planning and collaboration with program/project staff.
Required Qualifications
Proficient in communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Proficient in ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
Demonstrates ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns.
Demonstrates ability to analyze, research and synthesize large amounts of data with strong attention to detail.
Proficient in ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
Working knowledge of applicable policy analysis techniques.
Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Salary & Benefits
This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) non-exempt career position, which is paid biweekly at an hourly rate and is eligible for UC Benefits.

It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $29.31 - $50.38.
