Position description

The College Writing Programs at the University of California, Berkeley, invites applications for a pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach courses in the Summer English Language Studies (SELS) program should openings arise. Courses in the Summer English Language Studies program are aimed at high-beginning through advanced level students who want to enhance their English language skills, improve job performance, or undertake university work.

The majority of our students are matriculated college students from a variety of geographical locations. Approximately one-fourth of our students are graduate or professional students. We also support high school students whose sights are set on university work in the U.S. Our students have high academic demands, and we set high academic standards.

Screening of applicants is ongoing and will continue as needed. The number of positions varies from summer to summer depending on the needs of the department. All positions are handled on a by-agreement basis.

Potential needs for Summer 2025 include instruction in the following :

  • English for specific purposes (business, law, science / technology, data science, other)
  • Academic English skills (academic writing, vocabulary, speaking, test preparation, etc.)
  • English through content (art, film, media, etc.).

Position title : Lecturer in Summer Sessions

Job duties :

Successful applicants will teach one or more summer ESL courses. The curriculum is grounded in theme-based classes and project-based learning. Applicants will have complete responsibility for classes, including crafting syllabi, teaching in a classroom environment, and grading student work. Instructors will also be required to attend faculty meetings.

Successful applicants will have an interest not only in teaching, but also in being part of a faculty team. Participation in faculty development workshops and ongoing self-evaluation are important to our program.

UC lecturers are academic appointees and are represented by an exclusive bargaining agent, University Council - American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT). This position is covered by the collective bargaining agreement of the UC-AFT.

  • Completion of advanced degree
  • Preferred qualifications

  • A Masters' degree or higher, or equivalent international degree, in one of the following fields : TESL, TEFL, TEAL, applied linguistics, language teaching / education, ESP discipline (i.e., business, law, science / technology)
  • Three (3) years' or more experience teaching ESL / EFL to adult learners
  • Experience working with students in university-level courses
  • Experience with content-, theme-, and project-based language teaching
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
  • Experience living / working outside of the U.S. in a non-English speaking country
  • Basic proficiency in a language other than English
  • Evidence of clear communication skills as presented in application materials
