"Off-scale" salaries, which yield compensation that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions. Position description

The Berkeley Center for Law & Technology (BCLT) is seeking to hire a Life Sciences Project Director.

The Berkeley Center for Law & Technology is the focal point at the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law for teaching, research, and student activities on issues at the intersection of law and technology. BCLT's programs encompass the full range of technology law, including intellectual property, privacy, cybercrime and cybersecurity, biotechnology, entertainment law, and telecommunications regulation.

BCLT's Life Science Project provides a dynamic forum for students, scholars, practitioners, and industry leaders to engage with the intellectual property, innovation, and regulatory challenges shaping the life sciences sector. The Project supports and conducts research on a range of topics, including intellectual property protection for pharmaceutical innovations, bioethics, FDA regulatory frameworks, the intersection of artificial intelligence and healthcare data, and health data privacy regulations.

The Life Sciences Project Director will collaborate with BCLT faculty and the BCLT Executive Director to design and implement the BCLT Life Sciences Project as an independent research program with programmatic responsibility. Travel is required.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Conduct and publish research on legal issues related to innovation in the life sciences, including work aimed at audiences beyond academia.
  • Oversee the BCLT Life Sciences Project, ensuring its sustainability and growth.
  • Develop interdisciplinary partnerships and programming that connect life sciences research with legal scholarship, specifically engaging students, legal scholar and practitioners, and industry stakeholders.
  • Strengthen engagement by creating a dialogue with life sciences innovators, attorneys, policymakers, and other stakeholders.
  • Organize workshops, conferences, and discussions with legal practitioners, judges, policymakers, and industry leaders.
  • Foster collaborations with the Bakar Bioenginuity Hub and QB3 Institute, creating experiential learning opportunities for law students.
  • Assist in identifying and securing funding opportunities, as well as developing proposals for additional support.

Teaching and Mentoring:

  • Teach writing seminars related to life sciences law.
  • Support student-focused initiatives and coordinate the Legal Technology Writing Workshop, guiding student research and publication efforts.
  • Oversee programmatic operations of Legal Technology Writing Workshop, including student participation and development of student notes from the Workshop.

Instructors for lecture courses are appointed under the Lecturer title. The selected applicant will have key teaching responsibilities, including developing course materials, maintaining a course website, evaluating student work, and providing academic advising.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
  • Candidate must hold a J.D. degree or equivalent international degree
Preferred qualifications
  • Advance degree in Life Science
  • 0-2 years of experience in the life sciences legal industry
  • Admission to practice law in at least one state (California Bar not require)
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills.
  • Advanced ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results.
  • Advanced ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers.
