Departmental Overview

The University of California Police Department provides a full range of law enforcement services in support of the academic and public service missions of the University of California, serving a diverse community of more than 43,000 students and 14,000 faculty & staff in the vibrant City of Berkeley, at the heart of the San Francisco Bay Area. In addition to the

traditional role of a police department, we also carry out a variety of proactive educational, outreach and crime prevention programs. We pride ourselves in a professional and high-quality delivery of service, which we provide with sensitivity to the unique concerns of the University community.

At the Berkeley campus, we employ approximately 44 sworn peace officers, 70 full time civilian employees and 75 part-time students. We are interested in ethical, intelligent, creative and motivated candidates who possess the desire and talent required to address the unique challenges of our urban campus environment. We offer a wide variety of assignments and a public service experience unlike any other agency.

Position Summary

Involves protecting life and property, maintaining security and order, and preserving the general welfare of the organization. Engages in a variety of police activities such as patrolling, investigation, law enforcement, crime prevention and detection. Certified and conforms to the California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST).

Responsibilities

  • Attend and successfully complete the CA POST-certified Police Academy
  • The Basic Law Enforcement Academy prepares students for entry into the Police Department's field training program.
  • The Basic Law Enforcement Academy is a 6 month intensive course which will be academically and physically challenging. Students are tasked with solving complex problems in a highly stressful, disciplined and structured environment. The standards and values of the Law Enforcement Academy are high and very demanding. Those who are willing and capable of meeting the standards in academics, leadership ability, tactical skills, general performance, and physical ability will be certified to join the ranks of professional law enforcement.
  • Administrative duties
  • Study department regulations, communications, and complete timecard reporting.
  • Attend / staff department-wide training and special events.
  • Physical training and studying of academy curriculum.

Required Qualifications

  • Basic knowledge in the following areas : First Aid / CPR, campus streets, buildings, and parking lots, general law enforcement procedures, vehicle laws, use of firearms.
  • Observes situations analytically, impartially, and objectively, and to record pertinent information accurately and completely.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written skills and the ability to interact with a diverse community.
  • Education Level

  • High school diploma and / or equivalent certification / experience / training
  • Licenses / Certification Details

  • Possess a valid California Driver's License
  • Must complete a basic law enforcement training program and obtain certification.
  • Salary & Benefits

    This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) non-exempt career position, which is paid hourly and eligible for UC Benefits.

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

    The budgeted hourly rate that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $47.00 (Step 1.0 of 1.0).
