Position description

The Numata Center for Buddhist Studies oversees a variety of research programs, postdoctoral fellowships, scholarly events, and outreach activities at the University of California at Berkeley. With the generous support of the Shengyen Foundation, it is pleased to announce a two-year full-time postdoctoral research-teaching fellowship in Chinese Buddhism.

The Fellowship is intended to foster the academic careers of recent Ph.D.'s whose area of research is Chinese Buddhism; the Fellowship will provide them with time and funding to pursue their research along with the opportunity to gain teaching experience. Fellows are expected to teach one course per year as a Lecturer under the auspices of the Group in Buddhist Studies. In addition, Fellows will give a public lecture on their research as part of the Center for Buddhist Studies Colloquium Series, and they are expected to take part in regular Center for Buddhist Studies events and workshops.

Should you teach, you will be appointed to a lecturer position. Lecturer positions may range up to 33% time. General Duties as a lecturer in addition to teaching responsibilities include:

* Holding office hours
* Assigning grades
* Advising students
* Preparing course materials.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

PhD (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a PhD (or equivalent international degree) program

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
  • PhD or equivalent international degree
  • Candidates may have no more than two years of post-PhD research experience prior to the appointment start date.
Preferred qualifications
  • Ph.D. or equivalent international degree in Chinese Buddhism or related field.
  • University-level teaching experience in closely related field.
