Departmental Overview

The Department of Integrative Biology studies the evolution of life from molecular, functional, and ecological perspectives. Researchers in integrative biology work on organisms from across the tree of life, in the laboratory, field, and museums.

Position Summary

This position requires performing at a very high level in both project planning, experiment designing, and contributions to bench research. Specifically, 1) Read and review articles in the field of cricket wing polymorphisms, and design/plan experiments to basic research problems. Write and edit manuscripts and proposals, 2) Perform experiments to determine the mechanisms regulating cricket reproduction, 3) Analyse RNA-Seq dataset to determine factors regulating wing length.

Responsibilities

  • Perform experiments combining dietary manipulations and RNAi to determine effects of reproduction.
  • Analyse RNA-Seq data
  • Carry out neuroendocrine manipulations and measure gene expression using qPCR
  • Responsible for researching and reviewing articles in the field of wing polymorphisms and insect flight; design and plan experiments, perform necessary molecular genetic approaches, cricket husbandry.
  • Mentor and train undergraduate and graduate students
  • Maintain an accurate and detailed scientific logbook of all experiments and prepare figures to present the results in peer-reviewed journals, write and edit manuscripts and proposals.

Required Qualifications

  • 5 year experience in neurobiology and insect physiology.
  • Experience using molecular and genetic approaches in model and non-model insects, behavioral studies, and imaging studies to identify neurons that trigger changes in feeding behavior.
  • Training in RNA-Seq data analysis
  • Experience using Adobe Illustrator and R.
  • Incumbents are expected to possess the skills, knowledge, and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the positions. These skills, knowledge, and abilities are typically acquired through a combination of extensive study and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with field crickets.

Salary & Benefits

This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) exempt career position, which is paid monthly at an annual rate and is eligible for UC Benefits.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted annual salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $66,431.27 (Step 1) - $79,385.98 (Step 10).
