The Wingo lab is seeking a highly motivated Staff Research Associate to join our wet lab team. The Wingo lab is a genetics laboratory at UC Davis for Neurodegenerative Disease. Our lab focuses on understanding the genetic basis of neurodegenerative disease (i.e., Alzheimer’s Disease) and psychological traits (i.e., psychological well-being, resilience, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Under general supervision, the Staff Research Associate will provide research support by performing a variety of tasks including general management of laboratory, (e.g., DNA/RNA isolation, library preparation, nucleic acid assays, genotyping, cell culture, etc.). Laboratory management includes maintaining and managing equipment and lab infrastructure, providing technical support, mentoring, and training personnel, purchasing supplies and equipment, and occasional clerical work.

The position will work with the faculty member to ensure campus EH&S compliance and maintain the laboratory safety program and documentation.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, or related biological sciences field and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Previous experience working in a research setting.

  • Experience with one or more of the following: molecular cloning, immunohistochemistry, microscopy.

  • Experience with human tissue and human derived primary culture.

  • Demonstrated skill and experience with genetics and molecular biology.

  • Experience with lab chemicals, reagents, and standard laboratory instrumentation.

  • Knowledge and understanding of best practices to maintain research records and establish organizational systems for laboratory.

  • Interpersonal and communication skills to communicate both with faculty and personnel.

  • Skilled in communicating and cooperating with others and working in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Biological Sciences, Neuroscience or related field.

  • 1-3 years of experience in a laboratory setting.

  • Experience writing laboratory SOPs, data summaries and developing standardized training SOPs, BUAs, etc.

  • Demonstrated experience maintaining and troubleshooting laboratory equipment.

  • Demonstrated experience organizing data, keeping careful records and notebooks.

  • Experience in teaching and training students and technicians to acquire hands-on laboratory and research skills and assist in troubleshooting as needed.

  • Proficiency with the preparation of buffer solutions.

  • Proficiency in using laminar flow hood.

  • Ability to solve technical problems and troubleshoot experimental protocols.

  • Ability to generate graphs, tables, summary documents, etc.

  • Proficiency with: Electronic communication, Statistical software packages, Spreadsheets (i.e. Excel), Endnote, On-line information (Internet search engines), Literature services (Pubmed, etc.), Word processing and graphics programs

  • Knowledge of federal, state and campus policies and procedures for operating a safe laboratory environment (Injury, Illness and Prevention plans, Emergency action plans, etc.; safe use of chemicals, biohazardous agents, radioactive compounds, controlled substances, medical waste, etc.)

  • Familiarity with ordering procedures at UCD, including knowledge of laboratory suppliers; skills to maintain purchasing records and keep lab properly stocked.

  • Ability to work independently and pay close attention to detail.

  • Strong organizational, planning and communication skills.

  • Problem-solving, deductive reasoning, and decision-making skills.

  • Ability to learn new experimental methods as required.

Department Overview

The Department of Neurology conducts basic and clinical research on the nervous system and provides clinical care for people with neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia, epilepsy, movement disorders like Parkinson's and Huntington's diseases, tremor, dystonia, multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular conditions, headache and sleep disorders.

Our faculty includes leading neuroscientists, who work to expand our knowledge of nervous system function, as well as neurologists and psychologists who provide diagnosis and treatment for adults and children. We partner with colleagues from throughout the health system and work closely with the Department of Neurological Surgery to provide multidisciplinary team management for neurological disorders. We also offer cutting-edge diagnostic approaches, including advanced neuroimaging technologies and access to trials of new medications and other therapeutic modalities.

Work Environment
