Under the direction of the campus Attending Veterinarian, TRACS ensures humane care and use of animals used in teaching and research and is a leader in UC Davis’ Animal Care Program. TRACS is dedicated to helping conduct animal experiments in accordance with the highest scientific and ethical principles and assisting with the advancement of scientific knowledge and the future of research goals set forth by the University of California and the UC Davis campus.

Job Summary

Under direction of the Teaching and Research Animal Care Services (TRACS) Director of Operations, provide independent research and technical support as a vivarium supervisor including determining personnel schedules and assignments, ensure daily humane care of animals used for research and teaching, staff supervision, and provide ongoing training. Coordinate workflow and perform various administrative functions including but not limited to, maintaining monthly logs and room records, and recharge and billing support functions. Design or modify animal facilities for feeding, watering and restraining animals. Plan and/or assist with breeding programs for production colonies; maintain current census and facility safety standards and ensure adherence to SOPs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Substantial contact with animals and animal facilities.
  • Wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including: gown, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves and head covers.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Must be willing to perform assigned duties in BioSafety Level (BSL) 1, 2, or 3 facility where animals may be either naturally or experimentally infected with potentially hazardous diseases.
  • AALAS certification at the LATG (Laboratory Animal Technologist certification) level or higher or ability to obtain certification within one year of employment.
  • Must qualify for DOJ clearance for ABSL-3 laboratory access.
  • Work flexible hours, occasional overtime, and holidays.
  • There is restricted vacation during peak holiday times; flexibility to rotate as needed to all TRACS locations and other related job functions and/or to work under different supervisors.
  • Must review and adhere to the TRACS Employee Handbook and all applicable UC policies, processes, and programs.
  • This position will have substantial contact with animals.
  • This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
  • Valid CA driver’s license and participation in DMV Pull-Notice System required.
  • Required attendance at training classes at department’s discretion.
  • UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Additional Minimum License/Certification:

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a Life Science field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience applying general husbandry procedures for multiple species including rodents, rabbits, cats, dogs, sheep, pigs, and non-human primates, and biosecurity procedures associated with animal care. Including feeding, detailed cleaning/maintenance, infection control, health observations, weighing, handling and physical restraint.
  • Experience in immunocompromised/barrier-maintained rodents, colony management, and biosecurity procedures as it relates to animal care.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :

  • Working knowledge of state and federal regulations pertinent to animal research.
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Additional Preferred License/Certification:

  • AALAS certification at the LATG (Laboratory Animal Technologist Certification) level or higher.

Preferred Education/Experience:

  • Supervisory experience.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :

  • Knowledge of USDA regulations and OLAW practices and protocols pertaining to various animal species, including rodent colony management.
  • Knowledge of Chemical and Biological Hazards and waste management.
