Position description

Job Description : Under direction from the PI, the Assistant Project Scientist will perform research on cortical development in a variety of mammalian species. The job requires independent initiative to conduct molecular, histological, behavioral and electrophysiological recording experiments on mammals at various stages of development. The researcher must train other lab members in these techniques, help write IACUC protocols and SOPs and ensure all research is conducted according to NIH guidlines. This position requires animal handling, data collection and data management. Finally, this position requires preparing research results for presentations and publications, and assisting in teaching courses.

Job duties :

Independently perform electrophysiological and intracortical microstimulation experiments

Perform neurosurgery on a variety of mammals

Anesthetize and monitor anesthesia during surgery.

Post-surgical monitoring

Perform transcardial perfusions and extract fixed brain tissue for further processing.

Histological processing of brain tissue.

Animal husbandry on field pen rats

Microscopic analysis of brain tissue

Analyze behavioral data

Fabricate equipment when items are not commercially available

Be familiar with computer programs necessary for control, collection and analysis of experimental data

Be involved in the training of new lab personnel (graduate students, undergraduate volunteers, technicians)

Give lectures and presentation of research performed in the laboratory

Help draft and submit research proposals, manuscripts and grants

Qualifications

Basic qualifications

Ph.D. degree in Psychology, Neuroscience, or related field

Experience with performing single-unit electrophysiological recording experiments on rats and other species

Experience with performing intracortical microstimulation on rats

Experience with performing recovery and terminal neurosurgeries.

Experience with monitoring small animal anesthesia (for opossums, rats, voles, and other species) with ketamine, urethane, and isoflurane, performing surgical prep

Experience with performing transcardial perfusions and brain extraction on multiple animal species

Experience with performing post-operative monitoring and care following survival surgeries.

Experience writing computer programs in Matlab and / or Python to control experimental apparatus, collect data from sensors, perform statistical analysis and otherwise analyze data, and generate figures.

Experience with giving lectures / presentations on research performed in the lab and other topics in neuroscience to undergraduates and at conferences.
