The Career Advisor plays a vital role in supporting medical students' academic and professional development. This position provides individualized career advising using AAMC resources, facilitates workshops, and reviews key application materials such as Noteworthy Characteristics, CVs, and Personal Statements. It includes helping students identify extracurricular opportunities, connecting them with residents and alumni for mentorship, and collaborating with curriculum teams to plan career-focused sessions. The role also involves overseeing a comprehensive coaching program by supporting coaches through training, resources, and event coordination, while maintaining program evaluations and integrating coaching initiatives into the curriculum. As a primary triage point for students, this position addresses administrative needs, provides guidance on social and academic challenges, and offers reassurance to students facing emotional distress. Additional responsibilities include assisting in department events such as Transition to Medical School, Match Day, and Graduation, and coordinating the specialty advisors program by organizing specialty-focused events, workshops, and mentorship opportunities. This multifaceted role demands strong organizational and interpersonal skills to ensure students receive holistic support throughout their medical education.
Involves a wide range of student services duties and responsibilities for an academic school. Provides assistance to the dean / chair, faculty, and students in academic advising, recruitment, admissions, student orientation and events, career counseling, and related programs.
Experienced professional who knows how to apply theory and put it into practice within depth understanding of the professional field; independently performs the full range of responsibilities within the function; possesses broad job knowledge; analyzes problems / issues of diverse scope and determines solutions.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and / or certification if required of the position
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- At least 2-3 years of experience in academic advising, career counseling, or a related role, in higher education or medical education.
- 1-2 years of experience managing or supporting programs, including scheduling, event planning, and resource development.
- Demonstrated experience providing direct support to students, including handling administrative needs, addressing social and academic challenges, and making appropriate referrals to resources.
- Experience planning and executing small and large-scale events, such as workshops, mentorship sessions, and milestone celebrations.
- Proven ability to work with diverse stakeholders, including faculty, staff, and students, in a team-oriented environment.
- Familiarity with student management systems, learning management platforms (e.g., Elentra), or other administrative tools, with at least 1 year of relevant experience.
- Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
- Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.
- Ability in problem identification and reasoning; ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
- Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
- Basic knowledge of planning and executing events such as workshops, orientations, and milestone celebrations.
- Awareness of common student challenges, including academic, social, and emotional concerns, and resources to address them.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for interacting with students, faculty, and staff, as well as preparing newsletters and other materials.
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
- Empathy, cultural competency, and the ability to build trust and rapport with diverse student populations.
- Adept at identifying and addressing student needs, whether academic, administrative, or personal.
- Proficiency in using tools like Microsoft Office, database systems, and web platforms for program management and communication.
- Capacity to provide individualized guidance and connect students with appropriate resources and mentors.
- Ability to coordinate logistics for meetings, events, and workshops.
- Capability to maintain and improve coaching and specialty advisor programs through evaluation and resource development.
- Ability to handle emotionally sensitive situations and provide immediate, compassionate support to students in distress.

The Office of Medical Education (OME) is dedicated to the support and advancement of the
teaching mission of the School of Medicine. The primary goal of the department is to
create a supportive and stimulating learning environment that nurtures the requisite and
enduring attitudes, skills, and knowledge required of excellent physicians. OME is an
interdisciplinary team which provides a variety of services directly to students and faculty,
including : instructional materials, financial aid, counseling, tutoring and support for special
programs. OME staff offer support for various School of Medicine and Health System
committees, including the Promotions Board, the Committee on Educational Policy, and the
Educational Advisory Board. Finally, OME sponsors a number of special programs in
support of the academic mission and is able to assist with the presentation of those
sponsored by other administrative and academic groups.
