Department Purpose

Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS) provides primary care, mental health, acute care, laboratory, pharmacy, optometry, health education and counseling services to registered UC Davis students. SHCS serves approximately 300 patients per day during the school year. The mission is to provide campus health and wellness resources that enable students to successfully achieve their academic goals and life-long wellness. SHCS has approximately 160 staff including managers, senior professionals, professional and support staff, student employees, interns and post doc residents. SHCS is accredited by AAAHC (Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care), IACS (International Association for Counseling Services), and APA (American Psychological Association). SHCS mental health staff are an educationally diverse group of licensed psychologists, psychiatrists, masters-level therapists, and predoctoral and postdoctoral trainees, dedicated to assisting students and enriching the university community by providing individual counseling, group services, educational programs, psychological consultation, workshops, and other types of outreach services. Counseling services are offered at no cost to registered students. Community Counselors are members of the CS’ CAN Program staff, who assist students, including those from underserved populations, in coping with multiple and intersecting areas of wellness. This includes a holistic approach to areas of concern related to personal, social, academic and career choices, family issues, and other stress factors, i.e., financial and work-school balance. Each Community Counselor works closely with the CS Director of Multicultural Services and the other Community Counselors. Partner units within the Community Advising Network include: AB540 & Undocumented Student Resource Center Asian American Studies Center for African Diaspora Academic Student Success Center for Chicanx and Latinx Academic Student Success Cross Cultural Center Educational Opportunity Program Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual Resource Center Middle Eastern North African & South Asian Student Resources Native American Academic Student Success Center Services for International Students and Scholars Student Recruitment and Retention Center Transfer Reentry Center Veterans Success Center Women’s Resources and Research Center The partner unit directors or designee will participate with the CS Director of Multicultural Services in the recruitment and performance evaluation process for the Community Counselor assigned to their unit.

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Counseling Services (CS) Director of Multicultural Services, this position coordinates and develops partnerships with 2 student service units to provide regular consultation and effective case management of student situations. This Community Counselor position works with AB540 & Undocumented Student Resource Center and the Educational Opportunity Program and provides the following services to these units; Conduct assessments, respond to student needs, and make referrals to campus resources. Conduct outreach to students, faculty and staff about distressed and distressing students and other mental health issues. Provide consultation to students, faculty, and staff. Provide intake evaluation, treatment planning, crisis intervention, case management, and individual and group counseling and psychotherapy, with referrals to others as needed. Provide supervision and training to Counseling Services trainees in an APA accredited internship and APPIC-member postdoctoral program. Works as part of a multidisciplinary team. This position works closely with the CS Director of Multicultural Services, staff of partner units, and other Community Advising Network (CAN) Community Counselors.

• Work evenings and some weekends.
• Position subject to credentialing process at Student Health and Counseling Services.
• Position is subject to pre-placement screening provided by Occupational Health Services. Pre-placement screening will consist of infection control testing that includes blood tests for TB screening and other infectious diseases and may include a physical exam, provided by Occupational Health Services, given at no charge to the applicant. This is done to meet Federal, State and University requirements.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Additional Minimum License/Certification:

• Masters clinical/counseling degree and licensure (e.g., LMFT, LCSW, LPCC). Masters therapist applicants are governed by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences and are required to

• Psychologists (e.g., Psy.D., Ph.D.) governed by California Board of Psychology are required to possess valid license. Psychologist applicants possessing a valid license in another state must obtain California licensure within 180 days after submitting an application to become licensed in California or from date of commencement of residency in California, whichever comes first.

• Applicants who are not licensed, but who are license eligible as psychologists in California, must have passed the EPPP by time of application. Must possess California Board of Psychology valid license within 30 days of job offer.
• Current CPR certification or obtain within 90 days.

Minimum Education/Experience:

• Experience working with individuals from diverse social, cultural or socio-cultural backgrounds including experience treating diverse clients using short-term models of individual and group psychotherapy/counseling.
• Experience establishing professional work relationships.
• Experience assessing and intervening when individuals present in crisis.
• Experience providing culturally competent services to AB540 & undocumented clients. As well as experience providing culturally competent services to low-income, first generation, immigrant clients.
• Experience providing consultation and experience developing, implementing programs of a psychological nature.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :

• Knowledge of the dynamics of socialization, displacement, transition, oppression, internalized oppression and acculturation, and activism as it relates to the emotional well-being of an individual, while attending to the intersections of identity.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :

• Able to provide mental health services in an additional language (such as, Spanish, Tagalog, Korean, French or Vietnamese)
• Able to supervise predoctoral and postdoctoral trainees.
• Knowledge of ethical, legal and university standards and regulations.
