Under the guidance of the Associate Director, oversee, manage, and supervise daily operations of the clinical laboratory services at the Comparative Pathology Laboratory, a veterinary medical diagnostic laboratory providing clinical and research services for animals used in teaching and biomedical research in the UC system, other academic institutions, and private research/biotechnical facilities. Manage daily operations of diagnostic and health surveillance testing, including but not limited to clinical chemistry, hematology, molecular diagnostics, microbiology, serology, and parasitology. Act as the primary liaison between CPL and stakeholders and provide oversight of the diagnostic services budget. Oversee and manage the laboratory safety and regulatory compliance program, maintaining strict adherence to safety and animal care protocols. Receive samples, perform assays, collect data, and finalize reports. Provide consultations and input to clients regarding clinical laboratory services.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

- Extensive experience with and understanding of the principals involved with performing nucleic acid extractions and PCR asays, operating clinical biochemistry and hematology analyzers, parasitological methods such as tape tests and fecal flotations, bacteriological identification methods, and antibody/antigen assays.
- Extensive experience designing, validating, and implementing PCR assays to detect pathogens for research colony health surveillance.
- Advanced experience with laws and regulations pertaining to animal care and use in biomedical research settings and with regulatory compliance entities such as IACUC, CDPH and CUPA.
- Advanced experience performing quality assurance tasks such as creating/maintaining/updating standard operating procedures, training programs, equipment maintenance schedules, and data oversight.
- Advanced experience managing budgets, procurement, and financial planning related to laboratory management.
- Extensive experience with custom Laboratory Information Management Systems to include design, user account and permissions management, data validation and retrieval practices, and analysis of data trends for informed decision making.
- Strong supervisory and leadership skills to manage teams, schedules, and resources.
Preferred Qualifications
- Specialized training or certifications in management, such as Lean Six Sigma.
- Expertise with laboratory animal health surveillance programs.
- Significant (7 years) experience in a laboratory setting, preferably in a leadership role.
- Experience managing laboratory safety programs.

The Comparative Pathology Laboratory is a diagnostic veterinary medical laboratory at the University of California, Davis with a $2.4 million annual budget. CPL partners with the UC system and external research community to provide specialized pathology and clinical laboratory services critical for research involving animals.
The laboratory manager will oversee technical staff performing the daily operations of the clinical diagnostic services (clinical chemistry, hematology, molecular diagnostics, microbiology, serology, and parasitology). Primary technical efforts will be focused on managing the clinical pathology and molecular diagnostics for health surveillance, clinical diagnostics, and research purposes.

Work Environment
