Responsibilities
Position Summary:
The Critical Care Nurse Practitioner is a member of the intensive care team and has as his/her primary responsibility the management of critically ill complex patients in an intensive care setting. The critical care NP has specialized skill and knowledge related to the unique UCI setting in which s/he practices and performs physical exams, collects and documents data, conducts approved diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders, and schedules laboratory studies and professional consultations, prescribes appropriate interventions and medications, and provides direct care services in a specific ICU, according to established protocols and utilizes evidence-based clinical practice standards. The critical care NP contributes to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, and consulting, and provides leadership to the organization and nursing profession. Duties may include obtaining patient health histories and completing physical examinations, documenting findings noting pertinent normal and abnormal findings, and ordering and interpreting appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests. May also need to explain the necessity, preparation, nature, and anticipated effects of procedures to patients, patient’s family staff, and healthcare learners. Perform approved therapeutic or diagnostic procedures based on the patient’s clinical status. Document patient preparation and response to procedure(s). Formulate and implement a treatment plan for acute illness management in collaboration with the designated critical care supervising physician(s).

Required Qualifications:
Master’s of Science Degree in Nursing
Five years of clinical nursing experience; Combined education/experience as a substitute for minimum experience
ICU/critical care nursing experience required
Must be able to intubate patients or willing to perform this function once trained as well as managing critical situations including central line placement and codes
Current CA RN license
Current CA Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Certification
CA Nurse Practitioner Furnishing Certificat
Current National Provider Identification
Current DEA License at the time of credentialing
MSN graduates from 2008- present are required to have and maintain National Board Certification as a Nurse Practitioner for the patient population being served
Current BLS, ACLS, NIHSS
- Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
- Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across the Health System
Preferred Qualifications:
- Doctorate Nursing Practice Degree
- 2 Years as a nurse Practitioner
- Sub-specialty certification in practice area, critical care
- Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods
- Visual and auditory acuity necessary for responsibilities listed

- Knowledge of University and medical center organizations, policies, procedures and forms
