Functions as a recognized expert, providing authoritative professional guidance to staff within a specific area of service. The managed care pharmacist is responsible for performing various clinical duties related to utilization management of specialty (injectable) medications.  This includes but not limited to reviewing and rendering coverage determinations based on clinical criteria and health plan DOFRs (Division of Financial Responsibility).  The pharmacist will provide in depth clinical expertise to physicians and nurses for UCI Health.  In addition, assumes immediate responsibility for the clinical investigation of new drugs in the specialty. The pharmacist will undertake tasks and projects to identify opportunities to improve therapeutic and financial outcomes. Incumbents will lecture two times per year to other medical professionals and be published at least one time every three years in a medical journal. May be a co-principal investigator on patient clinical research, or an investigator on Pharmacy practice research.

  • Supervision: Acts as a coach and positive role model for staff by establishing and maintaining a safe work environment that fosters positive morale. Appropriately monitors and addresses performance issues, applying corrective or disciplinary action when needed. Effectively manages staff in compliance with applicable labor union agreement, and all established policies, procedures and legal guidelines. Ensures effective staffing levels, and handles recruitment and selection for unit. 10%
  • PHARM PROF SVS Responsible for the oversight of all continuous quality assessment and improvement programs for area of expertise. Demonstrates an awareness of legal issues and manages situations to ensure that area of responsibility is compliant with all applicable policies and laws. Reviews and evaluates QA data, and information on complaints and deviations, and appropriately initiates corrective action and/or reports out results of analysis to all appropriate parties 10%
  • PHARM PROF SVS Provides effective consultation in the formulation and implementation of research projects, grant development, and the dissemination of research funding. Develops and implements effective staff education programs based on identified learning needs. Provides effective daily educational contact with a variety of individuals, including patients, families, care providers and the community 5%
  • PHARM PROF SVS Performs an effective review of all case files relating to bad patient outcomes within area of specialty and takes appropriate follow up action . Appropriately initiates, designs, implements and validates new procedures and processes for more efficient pharmaceutical services and ensures that service requirements are appropriately met 5%
  • PHARM PROF SVS Perform the day-to-day responsibilities of drug distribution, computer drug and IV order processing. Accurately compounds and dispenses extemporaneous preparations and controlled substances. Appropriately prepares parenteral products using aseptic technique. Implements appropriate age related pharmaceutical therapy and performs and documents drug therapy interventions 5%
  • PHARM PROF SVS Functions as a clinic expert within area of specialty, developing and implementing appropriate treatment for patients with complex needs, based on advanced therapy evaluation. Participates as an effective member on multi-disciplinary clinical rounds. Demonstrates strong leadership skills and enhanced communication skills, including the ability listen for understanding and to give clear instruction 50%
  • PHARM PROF SVS Appropriately prepares, reviews, and approves validation protocols for process validations related to area of specialty. reviews and revises standard operating procedures in accordance with state and federal regulations, USP, and applicable guidelines to assure smooth operations and compliance with the appropriate guidelines, rules, and regulations 5%
  • Actively participates as a preceptor to pharmacy students, residents and technician students; actively participates in the training of new staff. Serves as an effective participant on clinical rounds and participates in committee meetings and programs to promote patient care, provider understanding and optimal drug therapy 10%

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum four years of clinical experience as a licensed pharmacist, or two years experience & a Residency
  • Expertise in Pharmacotherapy, Residency preferred
  • Current BLS or ACLS certification


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Significant experience (more than 2 years) developing and implementing drug utilization programs for both inpatient and outpatient populations
  • Effective presentation skills


Licenses and Certifications:

  • RPH (Required)
