Position description

The School of Education (SOE) at the University of California, Riverside invites applications and nominations for a full-time, tenure-track Associate Professor or Associate Professor of Teaching and Program Director position in the area of Counseling. The position will commence as early as July 1, 2025, or as negotiated.

Our Program, School, and University

The UCR SOE is a growing community that serves both undergraduate and graduate students. Located in a region rich in racial, cultural, and linguistic diversity, SOE serves majority students of color with a high percentage of working class and first-generation college students and boasts the most diverse faculty of a School of Education in the University of California system. Divided into area groups devoted to higher education; leadership and policy; social, cultural, linguistic, and racial analysis; cognition and learning; school psychology; and special education, our collective mission is to call students to teach students and advance equitable and transformative educational systems and practices that are reflective of and responsive to our local racially and economically diverse communities.

The UCR School of Education aims to develop scientist-practitioners who will disrupt structures, policies, and practices that contribute to racial and educational inequities and work to promote the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional well-being of racially and economically diverse K-20 students through their scholarship and practice. We are seeking a colleague with critical epistemological foundations, who will demonstrate leadership and contribute to the development of a newly formed program area of Counseling that aligns with the mission to provide exceptional training, address educational and mental health disparities, and develop culturally, racially, and linguistically responsive leaders in counseling. The ideal candidate will demonstrate an understanding of systemic racism and intersecting forms of oppression (cisheteropatriarchy, classism, ableism) in reproducing inequities in counseling services and outcomes. Position Description

We are seeking an innovative scholar whose research, training, and leadership in the role as Program Director will contribute significantly to developing a nationally-recognized Counseling program. The degree program offering will align with the requirements associated with obtaining the Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) credential. Ideal candidates will have an established record of exemplary scholarship in counseling, engage that research through a lens that is culturally and linguistically responsive to racially minoritized communities, and have a commitment to the training, advising, and teaching of diverse graduate students in a newly developed counseling program.

The Associate Professor / Program Director will provide leadership and collaboratively engage in long-term planning for the counseling program. Responsibilities of the director include recruitment and development of faculty in the new Counseling program; evaluating curriculum; maintaining program accreditations and approval; overseeing student enrollment, progress, and recruitment and retention activities; and coordination of graduate student field placements. The position can also support SOE initiatives and the development of new programs that align with the university's and school's goal for diversity, equity and inclusion.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A doctorate in counseling from an accredited program.
  • Previous experience as a faculty member in a counseling program and a record of excellence in graduate advising and teaching of students from diverse and historically underrepresented backgrounds in culturally responsive ways for core counseling courses. Potential courses may include Crisis Intervention in Counseling, Contemporary Practices in CMHC, Group Counseling, Social and Cultural Diversity, Diagnosis and Treatment Planning in Counseling, Research Methods & Program Evaluation in Counseling, Internship, and Practicum.
  • Established program of research and record of success in securing extramural funding. Candidates should have a demonstrated record for conducting research that centers the needs of students with historically minoritized identities including those based on race, ethnicity, socioeconomics, linguistics, gender, and others.
  • Capacity to build strong, sustainable relationships with local partners in our racially and economically diverse region.
  • Knowledge and skills to supervise graduate students in field activities and placements.
  • Commitment to the recruitment, retention, and development of a diverse student and faculty body, including advocating for the learning needs of diverse / historically underrepresented students in culturally responsive ways and the use of innovative teaching strategies.
  • Record of professional contributions to the field of counseling (e.g., professional development workshops, professional conference presentations).
  • Knowledge of the requirements of degrees designed towards graduates obtaining the LPCC.

  • Preference will be given to applicants with experiential knowledge of conducting research that centers the strengths and needs of historically minoritized student populations.
  • Prior experience and demonstrated commitment to working with historically marginalized and underserved students, families, and communities.
  • Prior experience and demonstrated commitment to recruiting and retaining graduate-level counseling students from diverse, historically underrepresented backgrounds (e.g., gender, racial / ethnic, linguistic).
  • Licensed or eligible to become licensed in counseling in CA.
  • Experience teaching diverse graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Experience supervising graduate students in field activities and placements that serve diverse populations.
