The University of California, Riverside (UCR) is excited to collaborate with the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to operate the Heavy-Duty Vehicle Inspection and Maintenance (HD I/M) Referee Program. We are looking for highly skilled Part-time Diesel Technicians to be a vital part of this important program.
What will you do? As a Diesel Technician, you will:
Conduct visual inspections of heavy-duty diesel engines and after-treatment systems.
Perform on-board diagnostics (OBD) readings and smoke opacity tests.
Verify vehicle modifications and ensure compliance with HD I/M regulations.
Report and document your inspection findings to CARB.
Travel across California to various testing sites, including community colleges or perform virtual inspections.
This is a unique opportunity to make a significant impact by ensuring heavy-duty vehicles meet emission standards and regulatory requirements. The program operates in compliance with Title 13, California Code of Regulations, Sections 2195 to 2199.1.

The full salary range for the Diesel Technician is $27.34 - $32.83 per hour. However, the expected pay scale for this position is up to $31.38. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, experience, and other business and organizational needs.
These are grant funded positions that run until June 1, 2025, with the potential for extension. Gain valuable experience in a critical program that supports environmental and regulatory efforts in California.
Applicants must have current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position. Currently, we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa for staff.
