The Assistant Director of Strategic Initiatives is responsible for collaborating with key campus stakeholders, the IGHS Executive Director, the Deputy Director, and the Director of Finance and Administration to develop a comprehensive organizational structure and people strategy for the Institute with a focus on preparing the organization for what global health will look like in the future. This role will bring advanced human resource management skills and organization development expertise to the strategic development and activation of Institute-wide operational plans. This role will be a member of the Executive Directors Office (EDO) and will function at all levels - from conceptual strategic design to actual management of day-to-day project activities, including assessing strategic objectives to anticipate impacts that require programmatic solutions and interventions, including people and change management solutions.

The Assistant Director of Strategic Initiatives will support and coach leaders from across the institute in building highly engaged, high-performing teams while developing leadership capability and talent pipelines. In addition, the encumbent will monitor organization performance and will focus on aligning all IGHS services and programs with business needs, strategic goals, and UCSF's culture and values.
Initiatives include analyzing human resource needs across eleven or more diverse centers within IGHS and strategically recommending organizational structures aligned with a vision for scientific growth during a period of rapidly changing funding and policies; reviewing the IGHS and system-wide global health needs assessment findings with an eye towards culture development to help inform the next strategic plan; partcipating in the strategic planning committee; implementing the IGHS flexible work plan by developing policies and procedures aligned with maximum space utilizization and collaborative culture development; creating a policy for performance awards that centers equity and alignment with strategic priorities; designing and administering an annual staff salary planning process; developing a global health-tailored people development strategy in alignment with the UCSF People Strategy; launching new initiatives to foster a culture of well-being and increased engagement for learners and employees based across the globe; and designing the change management strategy aligned with the newly launched IGHS strategic plan. This position will be integral to designing structures and people development programs for IGHS to become a campus-wide operational resource for faculty conducting global work by co-designing strategic inititiaves that lead to cost-savings across campus and iimproved nstitutional efficiences, which are especially important in difficult budget periods. All of these initiatives are vitally important to a growing institute with rapidly changing needs and diverse stakeholders, including faculty, staff, and students across many geographic locations and scientific disciplines. All operating decisions must demonstrate a strong commitment to equitable partnerships and align with the vision of IGHS leadership.
The Assistant Director of Strategic Initiatives will develop new programs for over 500 stakeholders within the Institute and collaborate with enterprise-wide leaders to global health contextually relevant initiatives that balance strategic goals with day-to-day execution to ensure successful program outcomes. The Assistant Director will be responsible for designing a people management and organizational structure best aligned with the vision of the IGHS Executive Director, a member of the Chancellor's cabinet. The incumbent must be experienced in providing advice to senior leaders and being a trusted resource to internal and external partners.

With a wide-ranging understanding of organizational dynamics, this role provides advanced-level guidance on business processes and strategic initiatives that have broad IGHS organizational impact. To achieve this, the incumbent will independently use and apply wide-ranging experience and proficiency in organizational development, effectiveness, business process analysis, and strategic planning on projects that impact a growing UCSF control point with impact across the enterprise. Uses advanced organizational development professional concepts and organization objectives to resolve complex organizational development, design and effectiveness issues. Regularly works on highly complex issues of strategic engagements where analysis of circumstances and information requires an in-depth evaluation of factors. The incumbent's expertise reflects human resource and organizational development expertise based on internal and external experience and provides sought-after guidance throughout the Institute. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results that link to the Institute goals. Balance both the strategic (big picture) and tactical (day-to-day) elements of product development to ensure that the product meets user needs and business objectives. Internal and external contacts often pertain to organization plans and objectives. Act as the point of contact for any IGHS Strategic HR issues or roadblocks, and quickly resolve problems that arise during initiative implementation.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $138,100 - $207,200 (Annual Rate).

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • 5 years directly relevant experience at an institution of higher education or a centralized business function of a large organization
  • Advanced knowledge of human resource and organizational development theories to design and implement strategic priorities focused on organizational development
  • Demonstrates strong analytical, problem-solving, project planning and implementation skills
  • Highly skilled in facilitation, consulting and relationship building within academic institutions, Organized Research Units (ORUs), or centralized business functions of large organizations
  • Applies strong verbal, written communication and presentation skills and demonstrates knowledge of these skills via past experience
  • Demonstrates skill in consulting to managers and groups at all levels, including executives at the Executive Director, Vice Chancellor, and Associate/Assistant Vice Chancellor level
  • Coaching of individuals includes staff and faculty people managers with diverse scientific perspectives and within unique organizational settings
  • Demonstrates ability to learn quickly, reason, synthesize and generalize based on information obtained; sound judgment; ability to draw unbiased conclusions. Must have experience maintaining confidentiality, poise, and being a trusted advisor to senior administrators
  • Ability to focus on priorities, strategies, and vision for a growing global health institute
  • Possesses strong consulting, relationship building, and strategic thinking skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree preferred
  • Knowledge of the consulting process to effectively lead engagements from inception to conclusion within institutions of higher education or equivalent large/complex organizations
  • Ability to persuade through both logic and appeal to positive motivations
  • Advanced knowledge of UC policies and procedures for human resource management and compliance
