Job Summary

We are seeking a creative, collaborative, and motivated Staff Research Associate to join the UCSF Quantitative Bioscience Institute (QBI, qbi.ucsf.edu/) Research and Engineering to Accelerate Discovery (READY) Center Team. This role will focus on utilizing cutting-edge CRISPR gene editing methods to support cell engineering projects that are part of a larger research platform designed to study disease biology at the cellular level and identify new therapeutic modalities.


The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $28.04 - $45.09 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The Quantitative Biosciences Institute (QBI) is an Organized Research Unit (ORU) at UCSF that seeks transformative results in biomedicine; the QBI supports fundamental quantitative research in the biological sciences. and fosters collaborations across the biomedical and the physical sciences, seeking quantitative methods to address pressing problems in biology and biomedicine. Motivated by problems of human disease, the QBI is committed to investigating fundamental biological mechanisms because ultimately solutions to many diseases have been revealed by unexpected discoveries in the basic sciences.

Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS in natural sciences (preferably Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular and Cell Biology or Chemical Biology) or a related science and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Routine cell culture of mammalian cell lines.
  • Practical knowledge and application of basic molecular biology techniques (e.g. nucleic acid extraction, PCR, cloning).
  • Maintain detailed records of experiments in online or physical laboratory notebooks.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; exceptional organizational skills.
  • creative thinking and problem solving, exceptional organizational skills, a strong work ethic, careful attention to detail.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with CRISPR/Cas tools and their applications for genome editing and high throughput functional genomics.
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture.
  • Ability to independently perform routine molecular biology assays such as PCR, qPCR, nucleic acid extraction.
  • Understanding of sequencing methods and their application.
  • Experience with automated or semi-automated systems for cell culture or molecular biology techniques.
