Job Summary

Under the direct supervision of the PI, this job entails processing human tissue samples and performing molecular and cell biologic techniques to study lung inflammation and remodeling to support grants in the laboratories of Prescott Woodruff and Nirav Bhakta. Specific techniques employed will include RNA preparation, PCR, ELISA, microscopy, cell culture and could potentially include studies with mice. Training will be provided. Experience with laboratory methods, computer skills, and molecular and cell biology is required.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $28.04 - $45.09 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Sleep Medicine Program includes the UCSF Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Sleep Medicine division (based at the Parnassus and Mt. Zion sites), the Pulmonary and Critical Care divisions of the San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center and the San Francisco VA Medical Center, and at UCSF's Mission Bay campus. Each emphasizes different aspects of care for patients with lung disease and lung disease research. The Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Sleep Medicine Division in the Department of Medicine have a long history of providing outstanding clinical care, performing innovative research and training academic scientists and physicians. We currently have active, well-funded clinical, translational and basic research programs in lung development, international lung health, pulmonary immunology, genetics of pulmonary and allergic diseases, lung transplantation, microbial pathogenesis, airway diseases, acute lung injury, pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary malignancies and pulmonary health disparities. Our large, NIH training grant has been continuously funded since 1966. Nearly a quarter of all academic pulmonologists in the United States have trained at UCSF. This combined unit includes: 7 outpatient clinics, 4 inpatient services, a pulmonary function diagnostic center, 15 independent wet labs, 4 independent research service cores, 6 independent clinical research units, one specialty destination program, and the Nina Ireland Program in Lung Health focusing on philanthropic activities.

Required Qualifications

SRA I:

  • BA/BA degree in a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Some exposure in cell/molecular biology, including proficiency in cell culture, immunostaining, DNA cloning, and qPCR
  • Willingness and ability to learn new methods, techniques and skills for changing research priorities
  • Ability to work independently and within a highly collaborative environment
  • Demonstrates quick learning skills
  • Excellent organizational skills, time management, administrative, interpersonal, strong verbal and written communication and data recording skills
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, multi-task and coordinate work tasks with others and meet multiple deadlines.
  • Working knowledge in Excel and Access data management programs

SRA II: In addition to the above,
  • One or more years of recent, directly related work experience following degree completion, exploring some aspects of biomedical science utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience in cell/molecular biology, including proficiency in cell culture, immunostaining, DNA cloning, and qPCR

Preferred Qualifications

SRA I/II:

  • Prior experience as obtained while in school for the following:
    • Analysis of gene expression (e.g. RNA isolation, PCR, etc)
  • At least 1 year working experience with applications in molecular and cell biology, and microscopy.
  • Database design skills: especially experience with writing queries in Access, although any relational database experience will also be desirable
  • Familiarity with flow cytometry is a plus
  • Experience handling mice, including mouse colonies and genotyping
