Position description

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), Department of Anesthesia and Perioperative Care is seeking a Chief of Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesia to join our faculty. The successful applicant will lead a team emphasizing high-quality, patient-centered perioperative care with a focus on evidence-based medicine. UCSF has a national reputation for excellence with high volumes in adult heart and lung transplantation, ECMO and mechanical circulatory support, and rapidly growing complex cardiothoracic cases including adult congenital cardiac surgery and minimally invasive and robotic techniques. This is an outstanding opportunity to lead a busy cardiothoracic anesthesia practice that encompasses all aspects of high-level cardiothoracic medicine as well as joining an established anesthesia department with a national reputation of excellence in education, research, and perioperative care. The chief will directly administer anesthesia and manage perioperative care for patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgeries and oversee the immediate postoperative care of cardiac surgery patients in the recovery room or intensive care unit, managing pain, and addressing any complications that may arise. They will provide supervision and guidance to other cardiothoracic anesthesiologists, residents, and fellows and collaborate with surgeons, cardiologists, intensivists, perfusionists, and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient care and outcomes. The chief will participate in quality improvement initiatives, research projects, and academic pursuits to advance the field of cardiac anesthesia and improve patient care across the entire spectrum of cardiology and cardiothoracic surgical care.

Successful applicants are board certified in cardiothoracic anesthesiology and demonstrate an aptitude for and dedication to medical education and providing evidence based, high quality care in clinical teams that enhance the patient experience with a commitment to patient safety and satisfaction. Applicants are expected to teach fellows, residents and medical students; participate in University service, faculty meetings, monthly Grand Rounds and M&M conferences and continuing education; and to advance the mission of the department. They will also participate in quality improvement initiatives, research projects, and academic pursuits to advance the field of cardiac anesthesia and improve patient care. Staying abreast of advancements in cardiac anesthesia, perioperative medicine, and related fields through continuing education, conferences, and professional development activities is also a requirement of the role.

The successful candidate must meet all the following qualifications by time of hire :

  • Must possess a valid California Medical License.
  • Must hold an MD, DO, or equivalent degree.
  • Must have completed a fellowship in adult cardiothoracic anesthesia or have equivalent advanced training and / or experience beyond that of anesthesia residency training.
  • Must have excellent perioperative TEE skills and able to teach TEE to fellows and residents.
  • Must be board certified / board eligible in cardiac anesthesiology.

The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 5 . The minimum base salary range for this position is $201,500 - $429,000. This position includes membership in the health sciences compensation plan which provides for eligibility for additional compensation. The total negotiated salary for this position will include the base salary plus the negotiated component, determined at the time of offer.
